Davina Rhine is a socially aware political activist who lives in Texas with her family. Her first book, Rebel Moms: The Off -Road Map for the Off -Road Mom, was published in 2011, which has received great reviews from BUST Magazine & Hip Mama Zine. She spends her days chasing the goddess and dharma and writing essays, fiction and poetry.

You Will Not Be Disappointed

I just read The Chronicles of the Pharaoh’s Daughter: Poems of Love, Loss & Rebirth by Davina Rhine (Rebellion Press, 2012). But I’m not going to tell you about it.
I won’t, for example, tell you about poems written in a language so concentrated, they say as much in lines as novels do in chapters. “The Pearl Affair” tells the story of a woman who tries on a pearl necklace that her father---or maybe her husband or lover---gave to another woman. But “it quickly burned my skin,” so she rejects it, wondering why the man could want the situation the necklace represents. This seven-line poem sticks in your mind for a long time, leaving you to puzzle over just what was happening there. You won’t, however, hear it from me.
Likewise, I won’t be filling you in on the wry humor and defiant spirit found in this book. The woman in “The Backyard Amazon” takes the notion of making lemonade out of lemons to a new level. She finds herself “[w]ith a husband away, a kid to raise/a family to feed, and a job to do.” This lady has no time to do yard work. Instead of despairing over her lack of a manicured lawn, though, she finds herself “loving the rainforest that has grown up around me” and takes satisfaction in “[g]iving nature a chance to be nature.” No sir/ma’am, you ain’t hearing this from me.
What’s more, I’ll be keeping everything I’ve learned from Ms. Rhine’s prose interludes throughout the book to myself, as well. “Addiction: the Pain of Angels” chronicles the author’s struggles to quit smoking. Rhine again elevates the subject to a higher purpose, turning the piece from a simple meditation on physical dependency to a frank examination of the reasons (physical and psychological) behind it, and a surprising revelation of what “angels,” in relation to the essay, means. “Mum,” though, is my word here.
And why am I being so close-lipped about this book? I want you to seek it out and read it yourself, that’s why. I will tell you just one thing: you will not be disappointed in this fine volume from Davina Rhine.
