When Police Become Prey: The Cold, Hard Facts of Neil Stonechild's Freezing Death, by Candis McLean

Two officers described as 'God's gift to the Native community' were never tried in a court of law, yet implicated through a public inquiry in a decade-old Aboriginal freezing death, and fired. All this during a time of great confusion, beneath an emotional cloud of alleged racism. The cold, hard fact is: now the dust has settled, not a single Saskatoon police officer was ever found involved in a single freezing death. Citizens are asking: 'If, the justice system can assign blame to two reputable officers without any real evidence - how safe are we?

Fact-based Book on Travesty of Justice that Ruined Two Police Officers’ Lives
By Gail Radford-Ross
In 2000, the decade-old freezing death of First Nations 17 year-old, Neil Stonechild, became a world-wide media storm of suspicion, accusations, false evidence, and faulty memories against the supposedly racist Saskatoon Police Service in Saskatoon, Canada. A Commission of Inquiry to determine the facts was called. Two officers with impeccable reputations, Larry Hartwig, then 41, and Brad Senger, 36, would pay the price with the loss of their jobs, benefits, reputations and ruination of their lives. Although the innocent officers had worked with individuals and groups of natives, both in their police duties and in their private lives, they were accused of racism but never charged with anything, thereby leaving them unable to defend themselves in court.

Their accuser was aboriginal Jason Roy, 26, who, at the time of Stonechild’s death in 1990, had been 16 and already had convictions for robbery, possession of stolen property over $1,000 and an attempt to obstruct justice. When the RCMP began investigating in 2000, Roy, the sole witness, had already been caught lying to police, using four different aliases on at least four different occasions.

In 2000, four years after kidnapping and robbing a citizen at knifepoint, and with 50 known run-ins with the law, Jason Roy became the RCMP’s star witness – indeed, the only witness claiming to have seen police involvement – in their investigation implicating two reputable police officers in the freezing death of Neil Stonechild.

The RCMP based their entire case on the ever-changing, uncorroborated word of a convicted felon! What were they thinking? And why didn’t they get him to take a polygraph as they'd demanded of the police officers they believed to be involved?

After disinterring Stonechild's body 11 years after his death, the Alberta Chief Medical Examiner reported: “…there is no evidence of any injury or other natural disease process to refute the original [1990] autopsy findings and conclusions”...(that Stonechild died an accidental death with no assault or bleeding.)

Author Candis McLean, a hard-hitting award-winning journalist for many years, has a family history of not only helping the native community but actually saving many of their lives. Her grandfather, Dr. George Ferguson, was for many years medical-director of the three tuberculosis sanatoria in Saskatchewan. In 1936, the death rate for Native infants in their first year was 1,603 per 100,000; by 1948, it was down to 17 per 100,000 – a nearly 100% improvement. Dr. Ferguson was made honourary Indian Chief Muskeke-O-Kemacan – Great White Physician.

Who was involved in destroying innocent police officers’ lives? The RCMP, lawyers, judges, the Saskatchewan government, native groups, journalists, and many who believed in political correctness rather than facts.

Commissioner David Wright, who believed the word of a convicted felon over the impeccable reputations of two police officers, stated: “I conclude by commending Jason Roy for his tenacity in pursuing this matter over many years.”

As Wallace Gilby Craig, a judge for 26 years in Vancouver’s Provincial Criminal Court states: Without impartiality, injustice prevails.

This travesty of Canadian justice is a must-read for all police officers as well as for anyone who cares about rampant politically-correct injustice in our world today.

It seems we would rather remain mired in ignorance and hate, just like Wrena who has spewed that ignorance ...

This book reveals the dark and insidious side of our justice system that few would even acknowledge much less understand. It reveals the facts of a media generated scandal, an ill young man who exploited that scandal, First Nations leaders who exploited the tragic freezing deaths to push for a separate, autonomous justice system, the RCMP "investigators" that couldn't admit they were duped, "justice" officials who were willing to sacrifice everything our justice system is to stand for and represent. The death of Neil Stonechild was indeed tragic but it was the only freezing death that was determined to be attributable to the police and now we learn even that isn't true either. Therefore the "Saskatoon Freezing Deaths" is another hoax aimed at destroying the police who are specially selected for their intelligence, honour, integrity, and commitment to service to ALL people. Don't Canadians want to know the truth of these matters so we can move on, learn from this, and prevent it from happening again? Apparently not as the officers were never allowed to defend themselves in a court of law. They can PROVE their innocence, yet no one cares. It seems we would rather remain mired in ignorance and hate, just like Wrena who has spewed that ignorance and hatred by calling Stonechild's death as a "brutal murder" and the officers "murderers". Such reckless and irresponsible statements are reprehensible. The officers were never charged much less convicted of wrongdoing in this case. Such comments should be deleted.

Have a closer look with an open mind.
By Jay T.
If this review is the closest you come to reading the book, please reconsider and buy it, borrow it, or talk to someone who has read it. It has been released, in large part, because the two subject officers have no further legal recourse to present the facts and clear their names.

I can say with certainty that anyone siding against the facts in this book have either read or watched no further than the superficial, abridged media reports of Justice Wrights opinion from the inquiry, or are operating with a blind bias to suit their own opinions on a bigger national issue.

If you want to stop unfounded persecution against ANY bevy of people you must not choose sides. Canada (and Saskatoon) has an unfortunate history when it comes to relations with the Aboriginal community. The original fabrication that lead to the insinuation that Neil Stonechild lost his life at the hands of two police officers only set us back further in the battle to mend those relationships.

Though the inquiry was botched, the police service still implemented several suggestions that show good faith in future trust building. The least the community can do now is vindicate Hartwig and Senger!
