Rita's World: A View from the Non-Physical, by Frank DeMarco

Rita's World is a conversation between friends in two worlds: Rita Warren, now in the non-physical world, Frank DeMarco, still in the body. While Rita was alive, the two had engaged in weekly sessions in which Rita had asked Frank questions about life, ranging from the simplest to the most profound. He had answered from an altered state of consciousness, speaking for the non-physical beings they called "the guys upstairs" or "TGU." Those sessions were made into a book, The Sphere and the Hologram, after she died in 2008. Now, seven years after she made her transition out of the physical life (3D), she returns to the same subjects with a different perspective...from her world now.

Is life meaningful? Are we somehow important to the world? Is there a way for us in 3D to visualize and understand the non-3D world?

Rita's World answers these questions. Flowing as simply and easily as a conversation between friends, it offers the reader a new way to see the world. It puts the center of life back where it belongs, after centuries of incomplete and misleading answers. What's more, it shows people by example how to find out for themselves what their life really is, and what it really amounts to.

Those who were fascinated by Seth or Edgar Cayce will like this book.

A stellar addition to channeling literature
By Ralphe Wiggins
In the early 2000's Frank DeMarco and Rita worked together to produce several books recording their communications with 'The Guys Upstairs'. Since then Rita died and in late 2014 she contacted DeMarco. That has resulted in another sequence of communicates, the first three months of which are contained in this book. They were close friends while Rita was in body and clearly that friendship has maintained.

This book is a must read for followers of DeMarco's earlier books, for followers of the Seth books, for fans of NDE and ODE descriptions, and for anyone interested in the relationships between living people and post-death beings. It brings new information that is both exciting and pertinent to how we live our lives.

A Unusually High Quality Read in the After-life Genre
By Sofia Axelsson
The after-life has always been one of humanities big mysteries. But while religions and belief-systems of old often has given images of what happens next that serves a certain purpose, today it seems that the idea of what comes after life is more open to interpretation than ever. And interest in after-life literature, such as the whole category of 'near death' experiences, is huge. It is a great thing then, to read something as understated, direct and open-minded as 'Rita's world'. What I really like about this book is that the whole premise is the friendship built up between the author Frank, and Rita. A respectful friendship, centered around their common interest in spirituality and philosophy in life, that simply doesn't end when Rita dies, but rather expands. From where she is on the other side, Rita has access to knowledge about existence that is far beyond ordinary knowledge. Through daily conversations Frank and Rita covers areas such as 'The nature of time,' 'Unlived potential' and 'Good and evil'.

Frank style is meticulous. Dates, time and pauses in the conversation is duly noted. He leaves room for Rita's views and everything seems transcribed word by word. For those tired of the after-life literature's sometimes grand, sweeping interpretations of, for example, 'near death' experiences, this is a great contrast. It is truly Rita's world we enter, and not the ego of Frank DeMarco, which unfortunately is the case for many other writers in the genre. 'Rita's World' is partially created in collaboration with Charles Sides, who helped him structure the questions and subquestions. This has probably enhanced the structure of the book.

For me, this is more than anything a book about a great, and touching friendship. And I leave the book feeling more convinced than ever that death is no end to special relationships, but that a lot of the After-life literature out there simplify the concept of death. This book does not.

An Adventure
By Amazon Customer
This book by Frank de Marco shows how we might add a new dimension to our social life. Suppose there were another channel of reality connecting the living and the dead. It might then be possible to communicate with friends and loved ones after they pass. In this book, the author shares his talent for tapping into that channel and conversing with disembodied minds. He doesn’t try to prove the entity he converses with – Rita -- is the dead lady he knew in life. That would distract him from the subtle process of his dialogue with the unseen. His book shows the reader how that process works. You are allowed to eavesdrop on a conversation where the line between the living and the dead vanishes and, with luck, one’s perception of reality is altered. This book is a powerful tool for exploring what it is like to experience a non-physical dimension of reality. DeMarco’s Rita is an invitation to perform an extraordinary experiment.

Does what it set out to do extremely well
By El Tonio
The very first review I ever wrote for Amazon.com was for this book's predecessor: The Star Wars Action Figure Archive. I liked the original quite a bit, so I immediately pre-ordered this book when I first saw it. I have spent the last couple of days carefully reading some parts and an quickly thumbing through others (for now) so I could write this review and let folks know what to expect. All things considered, I think this book is as good as the the original in most ways and believe it easily deserves at least 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars since fractions were not an option). Here's why.

First, this is a reference book and not a price guide (so, it contains tons of timeless information, but no prices that are quickly outdated). Second, it shows a picture of every figure released as off the time the book was set to the publisher, including most variations and many more obscure figures (with nearly 340 pages containing 6 or more photos each, I have no doubt the author covers at lest the 2300 figures mentioned in the intro). On a related note, all of the pictures are nicely sized so you can easily see the detail for each figure. For example, there are 54 Darth Vader figures covered over eight pages, and 89 Luke Skywalker figures covered over 11 pages. Second (at least for the vintage figures and probably for the rest, too, though I can't say for sure because I don't collect those), it shows each figure holding/wearing all of the weapons/accessories it originally came with. Third, it shows at least one still photo for a vast majority of the figures from the movies, TV shows, and/or comics (this is a wonderful way to see how the figures compare to the character they represent). Fourth, there is a brief commentary on every figure, and a slightly more in depth commentary on more important figures. Fifth, everything is in full color and on high quality semi-gloss paper (the book is an inch thick and weighs over 3.5 pounds). Finally, on p. 10 it shows a sample photo of the card/packaging from each of the 29 production lines included in the book (I mention this as it was one of my favorite features of the book).

That said, this book is a reference guide for the figures themselves and therefore does not deal with packaging of each figure in any meaningful way (so, if that is what you are looking for this may not be the book for you). This is too bad as it was a great feature in the original book (and my primary reason for giving it 4.5 rather than 5 stars). But, it does what it set out to do exceptionally well, is very fun to go through, and contains a lot of useful information that is not readily available elsewhere (especially all in one place), and I'm happy to round up to 5 stars. So, I think most Star Wars action figure collectors will find it to be a worthwhile reference for their library.

Great reference book for Star Wars figures.
By Vegas Gar
[[VIDEOID:moH8VXYN5JYAOK]]This is a great reference for vintage and modern figures. Most of the figures in the book are modern, but they do include all the vintage figures. All the pictures in the book are of OPEN figures, nothing MOC. Please see my video review for details. Thanks!

A great guide to an epic toy line
By Jeremy E. Schultz
This book is everything a long-time fan, like myself, wants from a reference book about the Star Wars toy line. This covers the entire line, up to the present, with excellent photos showing figures with their accessories. Even though I am a reformed collector, this will have a space on my bookshelf for years to come.

The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution, by Helen Azar

The First English Translation of the Wartime Diaries of the Eldest Daughter of Nicholas II, the Last Tsar of Russia, with Additional Documents of the PeriodIn August 1914, Russia entered World War I, and with it, the imperial family of Tsar Nicholas II was thrust into a conflict they would not survive. His eldest child, Olga Nikolaevna, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, had begun a diary in 1905 when she was ten years old and kept writing her thoughts and impressions of day-to-day life as a grand duchess until abruptly ending her entries when her father abdicated his throne in March 1917. Held at the State Archives of the Russian Federation in Moscow, Olga’s diaries during the wartime period have never been translated into English until this volume. At the outset of the war, Olga and her sister Tatiana worked as nurses in a military hospital along with their mother, Tsarina Alexandra. Olga’s younger sisters, Maria and Anastasia, visited the infirmaries to help raise the morale of the wounded and sick soldiers. The strain was indeed great, as Olga records her impressions of tending to the officers who had been injured and maimed in the fighting on the Russian front. Concerns about her sickly brother, Aleksei, abound, as well those for her father, who is seen attempting to manage the ongoing war. Gregori Rasputin appears in entries, too, in an affectionate manner as one would expect of a family friend. While the diaries reflect the interests of a young woman, her tone grows increasingly serious as the Russian army suffers setbacks, Rasputin is ultimately murdered, and a popular movement against her family begins to grow. At the point Olga ends her writing in 1917, the author continues the story by translating letters and impressions from family intimates, such as Anna Vyrubova, as well as the diary kept by Nicholas II himself. Finally, once the imperial family has been put under house arrest by the revolutionaries, we follow events through observations by Alexander Kerensky, head of the initial Provisional Government, these too in English translation for the first time. Olga would offer no further personal writings, as she and the rest of her family were crowded into the basement of a house in the Urals and shot to death in July 1918.The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution, translated and introduced by scientist and librarian Helen Azar, and supplemented with additional primary source material, is a remarkable document of a young woman who did not choose to be part of a royal family and never exploited her own position, but lost her life simply because of what her family represented.

Great for Teachers working on the subject share with your students
By Edward T. Winn
The book is the first of its kind, because it consists of the authentic diary entries of one of the daughters of the last Russian Tsar. In addition, it is not an indiscriminate repetitive collection of diary entries, but a collection of what looks like carefully chosen representative ones. Some of the entries have been published in Russian (never in English as far as I know), but many of the diary entries I am seeing here for the first time… As a bonus, the book does not only contain Olga’s diaries, but also some other valuable primary sources, including never before published (in English) diary entries of Tsar Nicholas II himself, as well as the memoirs of Alexander Kerensky, and the events seen from their points of view. These, and others, make this book an important resource for WWI and Russian revolution scholars and history buffs too. If you are looking for primary source material of this period, this book is definitely for you.

At last Olga Romanov speaks for herself !
By Voves
[[VIDEOID:mo1Z99I1XOBYJ0E]]As a long time Romanov enthusiast, with a particular interest in the Tsar's eldest daughter, Olga Nikolaevna ( 1895-1918) I'm so thrilled that Olga's diaries are at long last available to the English reader!

This is thanks to Helen Azar's marvelous translations of Olga's words in the book , " The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution "

Ms. Azar also included in her book a selection of never before translated letters of Olga's as well as a wealth of other primary sources, again never available in English before.

It's wonderful that along with seeing her photographs as well as reading about the Romanovs, one can finally read Olga's own words as well!

Thank you Ms Azar!

Rough Guide vs. Lonely Planet
By David
My friend and I visited Thailand earlier this month, and we conducted an experiment in the process: I used Rough Guide and she used Lonely Planet. We came up with similar trip plans, and we both turned to the Internet to fill in some blanks before squaring away our itinerary. Once on the road, we found ourselves using Rough Guide slightly more often than Lonely Planet.

Both guides are well organized and reasonably complete, but the Rough Guide's color maps are easier to read. While LP has more detail, it comes at the expense of readability, especially since the maps are not in color. The Rough Guide fails to adequately discuss elephant parks and other activity destinations around Chiang Mai. While LP does a better job, it still isn't complete, so I recommend using the Internet to get everything sorted out.

We did a back-to-back comparison of recommended Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, and we found the LP recommendation to be superior. However, several restaurant listings are the same in both guides, and we did not encounter a bad Rough Guide recommendation on our journey. We found the Rough Guide's accommodation listings to be more helpful in Chiang Mai and Ko Phi Phi, but the LP recommendations are not lacking. I recommend consulting TripAdvisor to get a fuller picture of available options, as neither guide provides an exhaustive listing.

I like that the Rough Guide has full color and more photos, but the Lonely Planet guide excels at legibility. The Rough Guide switches between a couple fonts, one of which is quite difficult to read, and text does not always flow up-to-down, left-to-right in its two-column layout. LP is the clear winner here.

Both guides are overall winners. Generally speaking, I recommend Lonely Planet for Bangkok and destinations to the north and Rough Guide for destinations to the south. Rough Guide does have the advantage of not being LP; there is an unfortunate number of tourists who never try something that wasn't printed in an LP guide first. Don't be one of them and you'll have a great time in Thailand!

Key to an awesome trip
By Kevin
I brought this book for my Nov 2012 Thailand trip. I waited until the current issue came out (a month before my trip). Totally worth the money. Rough Guide was perfect for my Southern Thailand itinerary. I went to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and of course, Bangkok. I stayed in all the recommended spots from the book except at Koh Phi Phi. Everything in the book was accurate. I love how Rough Guide adds in their opinion. I picked up the Lonely Planet version for Thailand in the book store after my trip and noticed they were less opinionated and just stated facts. It also didn't have as much content as the Rough Guide. All the travelers I met during the trip used Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide actually had different hostels/hotels they recommend and I believe they had even more than Lonely Planet. The maps were easy to read. My Rough Guide was able to take a lot of abuse during the trip. If you are planning on going to Thailand, I would definitely recommend this book over others.

Great for browsing, only fair for actual research
By Chris Backe
Like most guidebooks, it's great for browsing, but it's already out of date. As a travel blogger, I find myself using it occasionally to round out (or sometimes confirm) a trip. It's rarely left the house (mainly because I'll take notes and e-mail them to myself), and it's heavy. That can't fairly be helped, but the font can - a light sans-serif font that's difficult to read in lower light. The smaller font size doesn't help either.

If you're planning an epic trip of Thailand, or prefer to browse travel guides, this is fine. If your trip will be less than a couple of weeks long, this is overkill.

Salt: A World History, by Mark Kurlansky

Homer called salt a divine substance. Plato described it as especially dear to the gods. Today we take salt for granted, a common, inexpensive substance that seasons food or clears ice from roads, a word used casually in expressions ("salt of the earth," take it with a grain of salt") without appreciating their deeper meaning. However, as Mark Kurlansky so brilliantly relates in his world- encompassing new book, salt―the only rock we eat―has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of mankind.

Until about 100 years ago, when modern chemistry and geology revealed how prevalent it is, salt was one of the most sought-after commodities, and no wonder, for without it humans and animals could not live. Salt has often been considered so valuable that it served as currency, and it is still exchanged as such in places today. Demand for salt established the earliest trade routes, across unknown oceans and the remotest of deserts: the city of Jericho was founded almost 10,000 years ago as a salt trading center. Because of its worth, salt has provoked and financed some wars, and been a strategic element in others, such as the American Revolution and the Civil War. Salt taxes secured empires across Europe and Asia and have also inspired revolution (Gandhi's salt march in 1930 began the overthrow of British rule in India); indeed, salt has been central to the age-old debate about the rights of government to tax and control economies.

The story of salt encompasses fields as disparate as engineering, religion, and food, all of which Kurlansky richly explores. Few endeavors have inspired more ingenuity than salt making, from the natural gas furnaces of ancient China to the drilling techniques that led to the age of petroleum, and salt revenues have funded some of the greatest public works in history, including the Erie Canal, and even cities (Syracuse, New York). Salt's ability to preserve and to sustain life has made it a metaphorical symbol in all religions. Just as significantly, salt has shaped the history of foods like cheese, sauerkraut, olives, and more, and Kurlansky, an award-winning food writer, conveys how they have in turn molded civilization and eating habits the world over.

Salt is veined with colorful characters, from Li Bing, the Chinese bureaucrat who built the world's first dam in 250 BC, to Pattillo Higgins and Anthony Lucas who, ignoring the advice of geologists, drilled an east Texas salt dome in 1901 and discovered an oil reserve so large it gave birth to the age of petroleum. From the sinking salt towns of Cheshire in England to the celebrated salt mine on Avery Island in Louisiana; from the remotest islands in the Caribbean where roads are made of salt to rural Sichaun province, where the last home-made soya sauce is made, Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

From Publishers Weekly
Only Kurlansky, winner of the James Beard Award for Excellence in Food Writing for Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World, could woo readers toward such an off-beat topic. Yet salt, Kurlansky asserts, has "shaped civilization." Although now taken for granted, these square crystals are not only of practical use, but over the ages have symbolized fertility (it is, after all, the root of the word "salacious") and lasting covenants, and have been used in magical charms. Called a "divine substance" by Homer, salt is an essential part of the human body, was one of the first international commodities and was often used as currency throughout the developing world. Kurlansky traces the history of salt's influences from prehistoric China and ancient Africa (in Egypt they made mummies using salt) to Europe (in 12th-century Provence, France, salt merchants built "a system of solar evaporation ponds") and the Americas, through chapters with intriguing titles like "A Discourse on Salt, Cadavers and Pungent Sauces." The book is populated with characters as diverse as frozen-food giant Clarence Birdseye; Gandhi, who broke the British salt law that forbade salt production in India because it outdid the British salt trade; and New York City's sturgeon king, Barney Greengrass. Throughout his engaging, well-researched history, Kurlansky sprinkles witty asides and amusing anecdotes. A piquant blend of the historic, political, commercial, scientific and culinary, the book is sure to entertain as well as educate. Pierre Laszlo's Salt: Grain of Life (Forecasts, Aug. 6) got to the finish line first but doesn't compare to this artful narrative. 15 recipes, 4o illus., 7 maps.

From Library Journal
In his latest work, Kurlansky (Cod, The Basque History of the World) is in command of every facet of his topic, and he conveys his knowledge in a readable, easy style. Deftly leading readers around the world and across cultures and centuries, he takes an inexpensive, mundane item and shows how it has influenced and affected wars, cultures, governments, religions, societies, economies, cooking (there are a few recipes), and foods. In addition, he provides information on the chemistry, geology, mining, refining, and production of salt, again across cultures, continents, and time periods. The 26 chapters flow in chronological order, and the cast of characters includes fishermen, kings, Native Americans, and even Gandhi. An entertaining, informative read, this is highly recommended for all collections. [For another book on the topic, see Pierre Laszlo's more esoteric Salt: Grain of Life, LJ 7/01; other recent micro-histories include Joseph Amato's Dust, Mort Rosenblum's Olive, and Tom Vanderbilt's The Sneaker Book. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Kurlansky thinks big. First, there was Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World (1997), then The Basque History of the World (1999), and now, the world history of a subject bigger than one of the most important food commodities in the West, bigger than the oldest extant European culture--that culinary sine qua non, salt. Of course, salt is necessary for life itself; living bodies eliminate it, and without replenishment by ingestion, humans and other animals soon die, which is why animal trails lead to salt licks, and the first human paths did, too. Moreover, salt is a dandy preservative of meat, vegetables, and, as the ancient Egyptians knew, corpses. Homo faber figured out how to get salt out of brine, a discovery that increased the number of places people could prosper. Still, though salt is a very common substance, it is not always easily accessible, and weather and climate can make extraction from brine impractical. Hence, salt became the basis of wealth for communities, principalities, and empires, even after the invention of refrigeration and the diagnosis of hypertension. This is the big story Kurlansky unfolds in chapters that proceed from time immemorial to the present and cover such specific topics as "Salt's Salad Days" in ancient Rome; the "Nordic Dream" of enough salt for all Scandinavia's herring, not to mention lakrits (salted licorice); how, just as oil won the Big One, salt largely won the War between the States; and why, when Gandhi really got down to persuading the British out of India, he started with a "salt march." Tasty, very tasty! Ray Olson

incredibly slow read
By Wyn
I picked this book up thinking it would be along the lines of The Edible History of Humanity or The History of the World in 6 Glasses, both by Tom Standage. I couldn't have been more wrong. Where those two books had a clear timeline, this book seemed to jump in ways that seem random. The first section examines salt production in the old world of the China, Egypt and Africa and Ancient Rome. It logically pairs the salt production with its use in food preservation. The second section is the new world of Europe, North America (evidently there isn't salt in South America) and Scandinavia. The third section is devoted towards modern production (think Industrial Revolution and forward). In this third section the geography is more varied than before. It also highlights modern production of salt including the addition of Iodine to commercial salt.
In all three sections, there is a tendency to lose momentum repeatedly in the same chapter. The text is punctuated with recipes involving salts. One or two of these interludes per section might have been interesting; one or two per chapter is somewhat annoying. I also felt that the in depth but somewhat (at times) confusing descriptions of salt production methods were more distracting than helpful.
The book does try to encompass major events, such as the French Revolution and British colonialism in India and China, through what I like to call the salt filter. How did taxation or the availability of salt affect events? The book brings a broader perspective on the French revolution even to the politics of the Indian independence movement. I felt that this salt filter was sometimes applied a little too heavily and discounted other driving factors behind unrest, revolution and how a society functioned.
The author tended to get caught in trends of salt use and then expanded upon them ad nauseum. It was interesting to learn about the fishery industry that until recently was heavily interdependent on the salt trade. I sometimes felt I was reading a history of fishing more than salt, especially during the second section.
There was only a cursory mention of the chemical nature of salt. It felt more like the author felt he had to include something and did some quick research without actually understanding the chemistry behind the formation of salt. The author briefly mentions that scientists aren't exactly sure what caused salt formations to appear as they did but never offered any of the current theories. This might be my scientific background speaking, but I really wasn't impressed with how little chemical explanation was found in this book. I also feel that the author could have gone into why salt is an important mineral in the human diet. He often noted this without any explanation.
Despite my very pointed criticisms, I still feel that this was a book that was worth reading. The writing style was mediocre at best, but you felt the author had an unhealthy obsession with salt. I think that this obsession both hurt and aided the finished book. There were details in there that no other human would think to research which resulted in both interesting and terribly boring passages. This is far from light reading even by my twisted standards (I read biographies and science texts for fun.)

EXCELLENT!
By Fredrick Upchurch
One of my neices in college recommeded this book. I've read it twice as I usually do when the book is as good as this one.

If you like wide-ranging and well-written books such as those written by Jared Diamond, you'll love this book. I've enjoyed reading, especially history all my life, and this book is the reason why: I learned a lot I didn't know.

I certainly never realized that salt has been critical to human existence for thousands of years. From prehistoric times, the easily obtainable salt supply was far more limited than now, and salt sources were often the basis of human settlements word-wide throughout history until only recently.

The book is never tedious or boring. Reading the book showed me (once again) that a well-written history book can be a fascinating enjoyment.

Highly recommended. I have already ordered out another Mark Kurlansky book. Can't wait.
By Andy McKinney
With so many other reviews I will keep this short......Who in the world could make such a dry subject so interesting, entertaining and informative? Only Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky has a natural, easy and fluid flow to his words that make him a joy to read. This work spans the years from the very first know salt works to the modern day efforts of Leslie and Morton. He spends a lot of time with the makers of Tabasco on Avery Island La. because that story is so darn interesting-and the product is familiar to us all. It turns out that the hot sauce maker is co-located with an underground pillar of salt that might be 40,000 feet deep. And don't let me get started on the complexities of Chinese cooking, not to say the inventiveness of Chinese salt manufacturers.
This is an excellent story from a top flight writer.

Quality Investing: Owning the best companies for the long term, by Torkell T. Eide, Lawrence A. Cunningham, Patrick Hargreaves

The concept of quality is familiar. People make judgments about it every day. Yet articulating a clear definition of quality is challenging.
The best companies often appear to be characterized by an ineffable something, much like that of people who seem graced by a lucky gene. Think about those of your peers who seem a lot like you but somehow always catch a break. They are not obviously smarter, smoother, richer, or better-looking than you, yet they are admitted to their university of choice, get their dream job, and earn considerable wealth. Try to discern what they have that you don't, and you are stumped. Chalk it up to fate or plain dumb luck.
Businesses can be similar. For reasons that are not always evident, some end up doing the right things with better results than average. They may not appear to be savvier acquirers, more adept marketers, or bolder pioneers, yet they integrate new businesses better, launch products more successfully, and open new markets with fewer mishaps. Perhaps through some combination of vision, scale, or business philosophy, these companies uncannily come out ahead.
In our view, three characteristics indicate quality. These are strong, predictable cash generation; sustainably high returns on capital; and attractive growth opportunities.

Shockingly good. Another reviewer complains that there's no "framework" here
By brendan
Shockingly good.

Another reviewer complains that there's no "framework" here. Thank God. Look, in some fields no matter how far you progress there's another framework - solid, concise, complex, interlocking body of knowledge - to be learned. Classical mechanics > electromagnetics > quantum, etc.

More commonly in other fields there's some basic useful framework everyone should learn right away, but once that's mastered progress is all about filling your head with and deeply internalizing a huge number of relatively simple facts, stories, and patterns. (Of course academics and their imitators do not accept this reality and pretend instead that the structure of knowledge in micro, macro, or psych - don't even get me started on biases/heuristics popularizations - can be reduced to a series of neat interlocking frameworks.)

Anyhow this book is packed dense with these useful chunks, and the more you've got stored away the more likely a light bulb of familiarity flickers in your head when you crack open a new 10-K.

For example, there's this company called Clearone that I've followed awhile that makes puzzlingly high gross margins considering what they do - video conferencing equipment. But it clicked when I read this book's chapter on how friendly middlemen can create unusually strong businesses, i.e. optometrists always recommending a particular brand of high quality glasses because he cares not at all about price.

Clearone sells to a friendly non-price sensitive middleman - big system integrators that do large scale technology installments for universities, corporations, hospitals, etc.

Anyhow, the book is great, dense, legitimately useful, and minimally redundant with other investing books because it skips the usual routine of either romanticizing basic value investing concepts or trying to force fit some artificial framework on the tangled mess of knowledge that is useful to investing.

Good Book on Quality Investing but No Framework
By Marc
It is a very good book on investing in quality companies. Investing is very difficult and there are so many exceptions to rules so there needs to breadth. Unfortunately, the only problem with the book is there is too much breadth and it is difficult to take away a framework that can be used for analyzing companies. It is a very good book that should be read and re-read. It is just written in a way that seems to have no linear path or a structure that can be used in analyzing companies.

If you are interested in a framework for investing in quality companies must reads ahead of Quality Investing are Michael Mauboussin's Measuring a Moat Essay, Bruce Greenwald's Competition Demystified, Professor J.Carlos Jarillo's Strategic Logic, and Joan Magretta's Understanding Michael Porter.

Solid Book
By Joshua T. Hill
The book was well written with plenty of examples. The book could have been a little deeper, but is good when taken at a high level.

Alternate reference for thermodynamics applications
By david j hartman
Although this material is a little dated, it is still an excellant side source for thermodynamics. It is always helpful using other references to help in forming a solution that can sometimes be difficult a text used for a course.
