The third volume, published in two parts, is an account of every aspect of Iranian civilisation from the death of Alexander in 323 BC to the advent of Islam in the seventh century AD. This complex period, of major importance in Iranian history and extending for almost a thousand years, encompasses the reigns of the Seleucid, the Parthian, the Kushan and Sasanian dynasties. As additions to the general objectives of these volumes, Professor Yarshater has included in this volume chapters on the institutional, administrative, legal, numismatic, linguistic and literary aspects of the period; and he further develops the scope of the volume by including studies of Iran's interaction with neighbouring societies, of Iran's mythical and legendary history, and of Iranian settlements outside the geographical boundaries of Iran and Afghanistan. This volume is the most comprehensive study published of this very important period of Iran's history.

Best of the Best!
By Snohvit
Cambridge histories are as a rule exceptionally good written, with balanced contributions from best scholars and amazing editing. Cambridge history of Iran is a masterpiece. As a lay person(I do go to college, but I'm in a master program in Math) I can't write a scholarly - or let's say professional - review, thus I'll write a very subjective one, I'll write about what I liked. First, there weren't any high claims, solved mysteries, fascinating story lines with a character one can associate with ala Indiana Jones. The main character in this book is the historical process, how did Iranian civilization evolved, how it developed into what we know about it, and what we don't know, what were social and political forces that shaped it. What was social, political, cultural(very vague category for the lack of a better word) life.
And the most important what I like about this book is the enjoyment that I got when reading it.

Pure poetry
By Houston Reader
The gist of the negative criticism about this book, including the review by Lionel Shriver, appears to me to be an expectation for a more traditional linear path with a recognizable climax and/or resolution. I felt no wish for this and was much more moved by its poetic structure. The lyricism was amplified by the juxtapositions and the unpredictable time movements. Isn't this how the mind works? I loved the dark interiority and the emotional drift. There is a leitmotif of absences and gaps and inability to connect along with a reverence for the unobtainable dark beauty that resides therein. I don't understand criticism that demands that writing turn a way it was never meant to go and supposes that a better book would have been written.

Maybe Michael Stipe liked it...
By Ursula
but it's too edgy for me, talks way too little about music, what it takes to be a musician, performances etc. I thought this would be a book about what it's like to be a musician. I love music, bands, Rock n Roll and everything to do with music. But it seems to me that this books is more about sex than anything else. Maybe I'm too old for this book. Yes, I am too old for this book. Maybe there is that much casual sex in the music scene but calling up a guy from the street and then have (presumably unprotected) sex is too much. I spent a couple of month with a band in the (roaring?) sixties and none of that went on.

Besides that I didn't like the excessive use of descriptive adjectives. Example: Billy, black-coated, yellow-legged, pink-footed, rubber-bonneted, walks in a large circle. It makes me dizzy reading it. It could be because English is my second language. It's not that I don't understand it but it just seems to much for me. The other expample: His face, in the half-light, has an ursine, lumpy quality. He looks like a bear?

Of course describing Germans (being German) as people who hate everybody and who hate themselves didn't exactly help.

I Know It's Only Rock and Roll.
By Jamie Greco
A very convincing on the road story. Having always had an interest in the back stairwells of Rock, I found this represented what I've always heard about tours; sex and drugs are mostly an attempt to override the loneliness and boredom of the road. The characters were written deftly and I found myself able to picture them with stand ins from the music world. The severe ups and downs of the music business were well illustrated. Anyone who has dreamed of being a rock star should probably consider this book, but middle aged women who are finding themselves aged out of the world they considered their own will relate.

A balanced biography of a man who epitomized an age
By Amit Kumar Banerji
After years of reading one-sided anti-Napoleonic tracts masquerading as respectable biographies it was a pleasure to finally come across a balanced view of a man, who for better or worse, epitomized the age of the French Revolution (1789-1815). It was very gratifying to hear the author Vincent Cronin state that he was attempting to find the real man behind the legend, that he was not content intellectually with either the myths created by uncritical admirers who saw no fault in Napoleon or those, on the opposite end of the spectrum, who considered him to be nothing less than the devil's incarnate.
Napoleon was an intensely complex figure with numerous and inherent contradictions, but he was far, quite far one would add, from anything approaching the vile characterizations made by detractors during his lifetime and ever since 1815. The fact that the great Georges Lefebvre admired Napoleon, to a certain degree, shows that Napoleon possessed qualities and ideas that set him beyond characterization as a mere military man. Indeed, Vincent Cronin illustrates how even as a newly-minted second lieutenant in the French Army the young Napoleon had been concerned more with social issues and the possibilities of reform than with pursuing military matters. He embraced the Revolution as it unfolded in 1789, as the surest way of leading to an enlightened society and government. It goes without saying, if it was not for the Revolution, professional careers would have remained closed to all but the extremely well-off and the aristocracy. In the realm of professional soldiering, officers of the caliber of Hoche, Joubert, Jourdan, Lannes, Carnot (the "Organizer of Victory") and Napoleon (it should be kept in mind that his background in the Corsican nobility would have had its limitations in Royalist France as well) himself, who were mostly members of the middle or lower-middle classes would have advanced no further than the rank of captain or major in a royalist army no matter what their capabilities. Napoleon's moment in the Revolution came when he played a pivotal role in the defeat of the combined counter-revolutionary and royalist forces at Toulon in December 1793. It should also not be forgotten that he was the protg of Augustin Robespierre, the younger brother of the great Jacobin, and who had described Napoleon as an officer of "transcendent merit." Napoleon was lucky to escape the bloodlust of the Thermidorians and their White Terror. As one of the few valuable and available military specialists not to have emigrated, he was given the responsibility for the defense of the National Convention against royalist forces in the journe of 13 Vendmiaire. While Napoleon accepted the Directory Government of France, he could not have been pleased by their increasingly undemocratic tendencies, manned as it was by mainly compromised revolutionaries tainted by Thermidor. Historians of course now have concrete evidence that Paul Barras and other Thermidorians were maneuvering to restore Louis XVIII after receiving pay-offs and pardons, and in the case of Barras the price was the tidy sum of twelve million francs. The events of 18 Brumaire of the Year VIII prevented that particular scheme.
It was thus that the Revolution was effectively ended and its gains secured for the middle-classes and for the landed peasantry. While Napoleon's centrist government tried to balance itself against both the left and the right, it was essentially a thankless job. On the one hand, the left had been grievously wounded, it would not recover until well into the 1820s as a cohesive force of any sort. The remnants, especially of the Jacobin tradition, remained unmoved by the new direction. The right on the other hand, recovered within France, and grew in strength outside Revolutionary France in the hostile reactionary courts of Europe and in Imperialist Britain. As Vincent Cronin put it succinctly, they made no distinctions between the National Convention, Sans-culottism, or the centrist rule of Napoleon. They would not rest until a Bourbon had been restored to the throne of France and the "natural order of things" imposed once again. It is also for this reason that Jacobins & others republicans did not wholly reject the coup of 1799. They were of course bitterly disappointed when Napoleon took on more powers himself (an interesting "what-might-have-been" situation to consider is what Louis Lazare Hoche, the committed Republican general whose popularity was on par with Napoleon's fame, would have made of the events of 18 Brumaire) and eased out from positions of influence and power most staunch and uncompromising Republicans who saw the establishment of the First Empire as a betrayal of the Revolution. Sadly, in the long run, this was not one of Napoleon's constructive acts because removing committed defenders of the Revolution could only weaken its defense from the Counter-Revolution. There is no denying that Napoleon did in fact institute many conservative laws, particularly in the social arena for example, which can be considered nothing less than 'anti-feminist' in modern parlance. These conservative laws stood side-by-side with the more enlightened progressive ideas of the Code Napoleon. Another conservative aspect of Napoleon's rule, indeed a glaring 'anti-revolutionary' action, was the brutal suppression of the Haitian struggle for liberation (this biography does not delve into this issue). This act is an example of the contradictions that Napoleon represented and it is one of those issues that certainly did not enhance his reputation.
Whatever else that can be said about Napoleon, he embodied, whether even if he liked it or not, the ideas of the French Revolution, and even for the sake of argument if he had wanted to reject those he could only do so at his own peril. Yet he also knew surely, that the energy and zeal of the French nation and its armies were driven by the ideals of the Revolution, and it was the revolutionized French army that was the mainstay of both the Consulate and the First Empire. Of course the whole idea for ending the Revolution was to rebuild France, something that the reactionary powers of Europe led by Britain would simply not allow. The discussion of the road to war in 1803 is quite insightful, the responsibility of the breach of the Treaty of Amiens lay with the British, not with Napoleon or the Consulate. As it was, given the covetous, brutal and blatant British empire-building in places such as South Asia (in fact, the defeat of the French fleet at Aboukir Bay discussed in the book meant that Napoleon was unable to assist Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the princely state of Mysore, who had waged a lonely but inspired struggle against the naked, criminal aggression of racist British imperialism for twenty years in southern India), not to mention the British imperialist war crimes, depredations & brutalities against the people of Ireland during the same period, the British were hardly in a position to make moral judgments about French Consular foreign policy, whatever its virtues or demerits. This is significant when one considers that the Wars of the Coalition continued unabated from 1803 until 1815. The author is also quite blunt in discussing the failings of Napoleon; the controversial execution of the Duke of Enghien as perhaps the most damaging political action. In personal terms, the author argues that Napoleon simply failed to understand the motivations of the various individuals he chose to bestow with his trust, from Talleyrand to Murat. For example, the insidious snake-in-the grass Talleyrand, as someone once famously termed him, goaded Napoleon into committing serious political errors, the Enghien Affair for one, that later proved costly. There were other failings, too much centralized power which was to be the critical weakness in his personalized rule, the lack of a General Staff or its equivalent to share the burdens of fighting against the coalitions. One perceptive observation of the author was that Napoleon was also to a great extent governed by circumstances; for example, while emigration gave Revolutionary France a new generation of innovative military leaders, the same could not be said about its impact on the French navy. While there had been a few notable successes, especially during the Year II under the supervision of Jean Bon Saint-Andr when a crucial grain fleet from the Americas reached the ports of the First Republic after an indecisive but bitter clash with the marauding British naval fleets, after Thermidor however Revolutionary France's naval record dipped again (in fact, arguably the greatest naval failure of the Directoire government of Revolutionary France was its inability to properly support the Rising of 1798 by Irish patriots, led by amongst others, by the brilliant, charismatic & completely selfless United Irishmen leader Theobald Wolfe Tone, who were fighting to oust the criminal & illegal occupation of their country by Britain). Despite intensified funding for all aspects of naval operations during the Consulate, Napoleon was unable to rebuild the navy before the shattering defeat of the Combined Fleet came to pass at Trafalgar. This battle indeed played, as Cronin observes, its part in forcing Napoleon to deal with the Russians to prevent the break-up of the Continental System.
The catastrophe of the Russian Campaign is gruesome at times in its detail, and the inability of the French to play the political angle before the invasion insured that the message of the Revolution would fall on deaf ears as far as the oppressed subjects of the Tsarist regime were concerned.
As the author rightly noted, as long as the revolutionary armies of Napoleon, particularly the veterans of the Italian & Egyptian Campaigns were in the field the coalition had been helpless (or in a state of stalemate) but once those armies and veterans disappeared in the vast snowy landscapes of Russia, France was once again on the defensive and as vulnerable as she had been in 1792.
Despite all odds, Napoleon made a final return after Elba, the famous "100 Days" or to be precise, the "136 Days." The gravity of the situation can be illustrated by the fact that all Jacobins and other republicans, who had rejected Napoleon until then, rallied around the returned emperor because a restoration would see the oblivion of everything for which the Revolution had been fought. In that, in the long run (barring the era of the Restoration, 1815-1823) they could have put aside their worries, the French Revolution had changed the world and nothing could reverse that however the reactionaries & conservatives might try. The ideals of the Revolution, of the rights of the citizen, democratic rule, secularism, egalitarianism amongst others were there to stay. And Napoleon was himself inextricably linked to all that, and represented them even if he did not necessarily abide by all of them. It is this Napoleon which Vincent Cronin has etched out superbly. This biography certainly leaves one exhausted at its end, truly, an epic about the "passionate drama" of a man who defined an age of possibility, exemplified by his own rise from a humble second-lieutenant to Emperor of the French First Empire, through the French Revolution. Ultimately, one's view of Napoleon depends on one's view of the French Revolution, and this excellent work by Vincent Cronin gives a balanced (an excellent and extremely useful bibliographical essay also details which memoirs, especially of those who "turned" against Napoleon after 1815 to ingratiate themselves with the Restoration, should be avoided in seeking an even-handed account of the events of 1789-1815) & sympathetic insight into Napoleon the man.

Great Introduction to a Fascinating Person and Period!
By Dave K
If someone asks me for a good place to start if they want to learn about Napoleon, I always recommend the Cronin biography. It offers an extremely flattering portrait of the emperor-perhaps too flattering. However, one does manage to see Napoleon as a brilliant man, and not just a demi-god. Cronin says in the introduction that he wanted to portray Napoleon as something other than as "a monster" . In this he succeeds.

There are times, however, in which Cronin defers too much to Napoleon. For example, in the episode at Jaffa, where Bonaparte orders the prisoners executed, Cronin writes that it "was the only thing he could do". That is not really true. Certainly a case can be made for ordering the executions, but it was not necessarily the "only" choice Bonaparte had. Also, he often takes Napoleon's own later statements (dictated in exile on St. Helena) at face value.

The book is odd in that, after a certain point, it ceases to be a chronological biography. I wonder if Cronin shortened his book for publication, or simply lost interest. Through the Brumaire coup and the establishment of the consulate, the book is in chronological order. After that, it sort of jumps around, so you are not informed of everything that was happening in Napoleon's life. It stops the narrative to describe a typical day in Napoleon's life. One chapter describes "The Empire Style". After these diversions, when it gets back on track, one finds that it has skipped some major campaigns, and the next thing you know, Napoleon is leading the army into Russia.

I still highly recommend the book as a starting point. After I read it, the next book I tackled was "The Campaigns of Napoleon" by David Chandler. I suppose you can say Cronin wisely left the details of Napoleon's military campaigns to others while concentrating on a look at Napoleon the man. The version of Cronin's bio that I first read was called Napoleon Bonaparte: An Intimate Biography" (some editions are merely called "Napoleon"). Cronin gives us more intimate personal details than many biographers, so his book should be regarded more as a personality profile than an exact account of Napoleon's entire career.

Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson, by William McKeen

“Gets it all in: the boozing and drugging . . . but also the intelligence, the loyalty, the inherent decency.” ―Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post

Hunter S. Thompson detonated a two-ton bomb under the staid field of journalism with his magazine pieces and revelatory Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In Outlaw Journalist, the famous inventor of Gonzo journalism is portrayed as never before. Through in-depth interviews with Thompson’s associates, William McKeen gets behind the drinking and the drugs to show the man and the writer―one who was happy to be considered an outlaw and for whom the calling of journalism was life.16 pages of photographs

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Even as a boy in Louisville, Kentucky, Hunter S. Thompson was charismatic, mischievous, and fearless. As the world’s most outrageous journalist, he even looked like a court jester from another planet, with his long limbs, jutting cigarette holder, big aviator glasses, and shorts. But the foulmouthed author of such incendiary works as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegasand the reluctant model for Uncle Duke in Doonesbury wasn’tjust a prankster; he truly cared about the world. He covered presidential campaigns with such passion, insight, and literary firepower he makes today’s trivial-pursuit pundits look like robots. After a sequence of spectacular firings from various newspapers, he found a home at Rolling Stone with editor Jann Wenner, who, after Thompson’s 2005 Hemingway-style suicide, put together an oral biography, Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson (2007). Now McKeen, who also knew Thompson, presents a rock-solid, more fully dimensional, empathic, androllicking portrait. Here is the hectic life, the scorching personality, the audacious acts and improbable triumphs, and, most importantly, a keen assessment of how Thompson revolutionized journalism. A voracious imbiber of booze and narcotics, Thompson declared, “I haven’t found a drug yet that can get you anywhere near as high as sitting at a desk writing.” --Donna Seaman

Review
“A definitive biography. . . . [McKeen] presents the life of this gifted yet troubled artist, warts and all, and he also takes the full measure of Thompson’s journalistic accomplishment . . . a comprehensive portrait.” (Louisville Courier-Journal)

“The best record to date of Thompson’s life.” (New York Observer)

“Essential.” (Miami Herald)

“Read it or die.” (Greg Palast)

This is the REAL bio, not some celebrity fraud
By A. Kneeland
Sure we've heard about his famous friends, his Rolling Stone cred, all the legendary drug abuse, so much so that it's made him a pop culture caricature. William McKeen is perhaps the first to step behind the curtain, cozy up to the good doctor's real posse and find out just what made the man behind the gonzo tick. This is a history book written for pleasure readers, filled with storytelling, charm, wit and yes, pain. McKeen manages to step back from the HST fame cycle and look again at the writer, the journalist and the very flawed spirit and tell his story with a discerning eye. While other fame-seekers and hangers-on have delved into the mystique with their own bio books, this one brings you the most respectable and honest cast of Thompson and his crazy life. A history and bio that's hard to put down.

Buy the Book, Take the Ride
By J. Marvel
McKeen has quite simply put together the definitive biography on Thompson, a work that would have Hunter writing and sending screeds via fax to everyone, yet deep down secretly admiring for its depth and brilliance. There are many legends, but "Outlaw Journalist" sorts fact from fiction and gives an honest take of Gonzo from beginning to end. There would be no higher tribute to the good doctor than buying McKeen's book and throwing it on the expense account along with three bottles of Wild Turkey and some Doritos ...

The Best!
By Rory Feehan
Here is what Anita Thompson had to say on her blog\about Outlaw Journalist:

" Of all the "Biographies" about Hunter that have come out in the last year, this is definitely the best. William was a friend to Hunter, had an academic history with him, and his book shows his interest in Hunter's work, more so than just tawdry gossip. It has far fewer inaccuracies than the others. William also managed to put out the book while dealing with his own health issues. So Huge congratulations to him. As Hunter's wife, I highly recommend this book to you!

until next time, your friend,

Anita Thompson"

UPDATE 8: A BOOK RECOMMENDATION.

Since ending the Overnight Diet (you can read about my experience below), I have continued to read and experiment with different diet approaches. For those of you who are still struggling to lose weight, I'd like to recommend this book: Fat Loss The Truth by John Fitzgerald, available here on Amazon. This is not a diet book per se, but I found it to be one of the clearest, most direct and free of BS books I have read. It makes the path to weight loss extremely clear and utterly simple. You will be kicking yourself, as I did, for wasting time and money with all the other approaches. And, as far as I can tell, author is not selling any products.

UPDATE 7: SUMMARY OF OVERNIGHT DIET

This update is a summary of my three weeks on the Overnight Diet. My original review at the start of the diet, and the progress updates can be read below. During three full weeks on the Overnight Diet, I lost a total of 2.5 lbs. My prior diet was giving me slow but steady weight loss, and I decided to try the Overnight Diet because of its promise of rapid weight loss, up to 9 lbs. per week. I'm reducing my rating for this diet from 3 to 2 stars, simply because this diet didn't even come close to meeting its promise of rapid, significant weight loss for me.

I didn't reduce the rating further because I do think the diet is generally pretty healthy. It doesn't contain any extreme aspects that would be hard to sustain, other than what I personally consider somewhat extreme protein requirements.

I've given a lot of thought to this diet, and the reasons why I may not have lost any significant weight on it. My conclusion is this: I didn't lose weight because the diet requires eating more calories than I was eating previously on a 1000-1200 calorie nutrient-dense diet. In the end, I'm forced to conclude that there isn't any magic in the high protein and the smoothies required by this diet -- it, like any diet, is mainly a question of calories in and calories out.

Every time I get hooked by some new diet twist I get excited that this might be the one! I'm sure many of you have been there. I haven't taken the time to figure out the approximate daily calories in this diet, but I've done a lot of calorie counting, and I would estimate that this diet has you eating in the neighborhood of 1500 to 2000 calories per day. If you are currently consuming significantly more than that, then you would would lose weight if you followed the diet exactly. However, if you are consuming approximately that amount, or less, as I was, you will not lose weight. In fact, you may gain weight.

I'll be resuming my previous diet, and I wish all you dieters out there loads of encouragement - and don't give up!!

ORIGINAL REVIEW WITH UPDATES:

The three stars are based on having read the book, but just starting the diet, and will have to wait and see about the results. I will update the review later, based on the results.

The PROS:

The diet seems healthy, not overly restrictive, has plenty of variety, and the recipes sound tasty. It seems like a style of eating that could be sustained over time, with self discipline. Like most diets, it does have a required exercise component.

The quantities of allowed foods are generous, and it does seem like one wouldn't get hungry on this diet.

You don't have to count calories.

The CONS:

Even though the author has tried to make the plan easy to follow, there is a fair amount of complexity to actually making a plan for the week, shopping for all the ingredients, following the recipes, and preparing them. To implement the plan fully seems like it would require spending most of the day in the kitchen, something I would find not doable. I found myself spending a lot of time trying to distill the information into a compact form that I could take to the market with me. I also spent time trying to understand the basic proportions of the different requirements so that I can make up my own dishes without having to follow the recipes, because following the recipes increases the workload and complexity quite a bit.

I'm very skeptical of the author's claim that one can lose 9 pounds per week on this diet (granted, she hedges this claim by saying "up to" 9 pounds, which means that any amount of weight loss would qualify as falling within the claim). However, the 9 pound claim is the "hook" for getting us to buy this book, so I'll be disappointed if I'm burned yet again.

Finally, another "hook" to make us buy the book is the promise of no restrictions on types of foods one can eat. Actually, there are quite a few restrictions. And although the author's website shows a photograph of a dinner plate with a generous heap of pasta, for foods like pasta or oatmeal, the actual portion sizes are 1/2 cup, hardly even worth preparing.

I do wish there was a video available for the exercise. I find it very difficult to try to do exercises from a book, while I am twisted into a pretzel and try to read the moves at the same time.

The QUESTION MARKS:

The diet is based on a very high amount of protein, every day, in every meal, for life. In my case, it is two or thee times the amount of protein I'm accustomed to eating. I don't know how healthy this is over time. There seem to be a lot of conflicting studies on this subject.

I'm also concerned about the cost of this diet, as it is based on very large daily amounts of expensive meats, poultry and fish (soy products for vegetarians). The protein in dairy or legumes cannot be counted towards the daily protein requirement in this diet. This is disappointing, as legumes, for example, have the combined qualities of good protein, low fat, high fiber, and low cost. For example, the only beef cuts permitted are Flank Steak ("London Broil"), Round Steak, and Beef Tenderloin ("Filet Mignon"). Since flank and round steak both take hours of prep time, that only leaves beef tenderloin if you just want to cook a quick steak. Since this cut costs anywhere from $16 to $20 per pound, this would have to be an occasional treat for most people. The author actually gives a recipe that calls for an entire beef tenderloin, which would probably cost at least $100 - something few would ever do in their lifetime.

So that is my summary for now. I intend to give it a try, and plan to follow the diet to the letter; otherwise my results would be inconclusive. I'm getting my shopping list together, and will update in a couple of weeks.

UPDATE 1:

Ok, it's only been one day, but thought I would let you know that after the first all-smoothie day, followed to the letter, I have lost 0.6 lbs overnight. That's a pretty far cry from the "lose 2 lbs. overnight" claimed by the author. Why am I not surprised?

UPDATE 2:

Unfortunately, only five days into the diet it's bad news. After a small amount of weight loss the first couple of days, the trend reversed and I found myself gaining weight. The reason couldn't be more obvious to me -- all those excessive pounds of meat are sitting in my digestive system like a ton of bricks. I normally have totally regular digestion, because I eat loads of high fiber vegetables anyway, but this diet has me completely constipated. Yuk, and now I have to figure out what to do about it. Today I'm taking a break and eating lightly and drinking lots of water. I don't want to give up yet, but its clear that the amounts of protein are too much for me. Tomorrow, if my digestion has improved, I plan to carry on, but reducing the author's amount of protein by 30% and see how that goes. I don't know, the author seems to think these huge quantities of protein are normal and healthy, but right from the beginning I felt heavy and bloated and had trouble contemplating yet another slab of meat at the next meal. And I like meat! Her spaghetti sauce recipe calls for a full 1/2 pound of beef per serving!! Just thinking about it makes me feel ill, but that could be due to the 3 or 4 pounds of meat stuck in my intestines right now. I should mention that I have followed the diet to the letter.

UPDATE 3:

It has been one full week since I started the Overnight Diet, and today is my second smoothie day. I had to take a couple of light eating days (lots of vegetable soup and water) in order to get over the nasty bout of constipation caused by all that protein. My plan for the coming week is to continue the diet, with one change - reducing the meat protein by 30%. That means instead of the 90 daily grams of meat protein prescribed by the author, I'm going to stick with about 60 grams, which is more than adequate protein intake. Keep in mind that the author only counts meat protein (or soy) towards the total protein intake. This completely ignores all the protein you get from dairy, legumes and grains, all of which contain quite a bit of protein. So even eating 60 grams of meat protein, I know that I'm getting quite a bit more than that from non-fat yogurt, non-fat milk, whole grain bread, legumes, etc. Keep in mind that the diet does restrict the amounts of these other foods.

Ok, now the bad news. From the morning of the first smoothie day, to the morning of the second smoothie day (one week) I have lost 1.6 pounds. I'm sure that those of you who bought the book, like me, were attracted like flies to the promise of losing "up to" 9 pounds per week. Don't think anything like that is going to happen. I'm going to stick with it for another week before making any further judgements. One problem with this diet, and most others, is their tendency to prescribe a single solution for everyone, ignoring the reality of so many different body types, different metabolisms, different dietary needs. I don't seem to be able to tolerate as much meat as is prescribed, but someone else may do just fine with it. I realize it's difficult for anyone reading my review to come to any conclusion for themselves.

UPDATE 4:

This update is just to let you know about a couple of tips for making the planning and shopping easier. For me, I spent the most time up front trying to extract and simplify the essential information from the book, which I managed to distill to a couple of short lists. I ended up with 2 stapled sheets of paper that contain everything needed to do the diet. I can take these to the market and leave them on the kitchen counter for reference. Most of the rest of the book is background, recipes, etc.

My option has been to do this diet using mostly my own familiar foods and ingredients, rather than trying to follow the recipes in the book. They do look good, and I'll probably try some, but following the recipes adds a lot of time, complexity and expense. Once you have distilled the essential information about the diet, using your own foods becomes simple. So, if you want, you can use the following information.

1. PROTEIN FOODS YOU CAN EAT. In the book you will find a list called "Protein Sources That Count Towards Your DPR For The 6-Day Fuel Up." For this diet, these are the ONLY protein sources that count towards your daily total. I reduced this list to the protein sources I would most likely eat, and made a chart listing these foods, and their protein content in 1, 3, and 6 ounces. I got the numbers from an excellent resource - NutritionData dot com. [Sorry, this review won't let me format the text, but you can copy it into Word or Excel and format it there.]

- Beef Tenderloin: 8g protein in 1oz, 24g protein in 3oz, 48g protein in 6oz
- Chicken Breast: 9g protein in 1oz, 27g protein in 3oz, 54g protein in 6oz
- Turkey Breast: 5g protein in 1oz, 15g protein in 3oz, 30g protein in 6oz
- Salmon Filet: 6g protein in 1oz, 18g protein in 3oz, 36g protein in 6oz
- Tuna, in Water: 7g protein in 1oz, 21g protein in 3oz, 42g protein in 6oz
- Pork Loin: 8g protein in 1oz, 24g protein in 3oz, 48g protein in 6oz
- Egg, 1 Whole: 6g protein in 1 egg, 18g protein in 3 eggs, 36g protein in 6 eggs
- Jarrow Protein Powder: 18g protein in 1 scoop, 36g in 2 scoops

2. NON-PROTEIN FOODS YOU CAN EAT. This is the list of optional foods and their daily restrictions:
- Unlimited non-starchy vegetables.
- Unlimited fruit.
- 1 cup starchy vegetables (corn, potatoes, yams, winter squash, legumes).
- 2-3 servings (according to label) of 100% whole grains: oats, rye, wheat, etc., in the form of bread, cereals, crackers.
- 1-2 cups of non-fat or 1% dairy: yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, etc.
- Up to 4 teaspoons of high-MUFA fats: olive oil, avocado, olive oil mayo, nuts, seeds.
- 1 glass wine.
- Sweeteners: Splenda, Stevia.

3. Copy the author's list of whole-grain serving sizes.

4. Finally, I made a little protein counting spreadsheet that I keep open in a corner of my computer desktop. It simply lists Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Other. The second column has a cell for putting in the protein count for each meal, and a total at the bottom. It's just a quick way to keep track. The next morning I clear the counts and start again. You could just as easily do this on paper.

That's all there is to it: For each meal choose one food from the PROTEIN list, in amount of about 1/3 of your daily protein requirement. Augment with any foods you want from the NON-PROTEIN list, making sure to stay within the daily limits. This is not how the author describes her program; it is my interpretation of how to do the diet simply, using your own familiar foods, rather than following the author's recipes. I believe it represents an accurate distillation of the author's program. Plus the exercise. And the smoothie days. You'll still want to read the book to understand the author's rationale for her program, and to learn how much protein you need to consume daily.

UPDATE 5:

This update is to offer my impressions of the Physicians Protein Smoothies that the author sells as an alternative to the homemade smoothie recipes in the book. I ordered a few to try out, and did so on my third smoothie day, day before yesterday. So, these ready-made smoothies pose a new puzzle: they are half the size (or less) and half the calories (or less) than the home-made smoothies in the book. The Physicians Protein Smoothies are only 160 calories, including the flavor packet. In drinking three of these in one day, you will consume a total of 480 calories that day. So, consuming next to nothing, I wasn't too surprised that the next morning I found I had lost 1.2 lbs. The trouble for me is, that after resuming the normal diet the following day, I gained that pound right back.

The ready-made smoothies, being much smaller in quantity, by early evening (the witching hour for the night time munchies) I was very hungry and it was a struggle to not cave in and have something to eat. As for the flavors, they are pleasant and very mild - kind of nondescript. You could probably punch them up a bit by adding some cinnamon or other flavorings. The smoothies have a sort of pudding-like texture that I found a little odd. I tried adding ice to the blender to reduce this. Adding ice also bulks up the apparent quantity, so you feel like you're having a little more than you really are.

I just don't understand the discrepancy between the ready made and homemade smoothies in terms of quantity and calories. The author seems to equate them.

So far, after two weeks on the diet, I've lost about 2 lbs., so about a pound a week.

UPDATE 6:

Yesterday was my 4th smoothie day, and the completion of three full weeks on the diet. I lost about 1/2 lb. this past week, bringing the total weight lost in three weeks to about 2.5 lbs. At this point I feel that I've given the diet a fair trial, and will probably not continue, as my prior diet was giving me better results. See my UPDATE 7 at the top of this review for an overall summary.

Make up your own menus!
By a reader
To all the people who have complained that the menus given in the book are too complicated and involve too much shopping, preparation, and cooking; I say make up your own menus. The 28 day menu is simply a guide. Every day you will have around 14 ounces of protein...give or take a few, 2-3 breads, 2 lowfat milks, 4 teaspoons of fat, unlimited fruit, and lots of vegetables. Also, up to 1 cup of starchy vegetables a day...as in butternut squash, peas, corn, mashed potato. This is so do-able! Construct your meals with the foods that you like, and are used to eating. Have two boiled eggs, a slice of toast with Smart Balance margarine, and a piece of fruit for breakfast, for example. Then a sandwich with 4 oz. of turkey, lettuce and tomato, a teaspoon of mayo, a glass of lowfat milk, a piece a fruit. And so on. I have just started, and on day one I began with the banana latte smoothie. I was hungry again in a very short time, so I knew that the One Day Power Up concept would not work for me. I am trying the diet without the smoothies, using real food.... no outlandish recipes, no black beans, miso, farro, ahi, swiss chard, or tofu.

Thrilled in San Diego
By Judi Ann Cantrell
I had been on an extreme exercise/diet regimen for six weeks and gained 2 pounds. I started The Overnight Diet a week ago and I've lost 6 pounds! I am never hungry! Some helpful hints: for those complaining of constipation, eat more fruits and vegetables and increase water intake. For those feeling it is difficult because of the complex and expensive recipes, just plan your food intake based on a typical meal. I made myself a little chart that has the serving requirements. If I eat a slice of bread, some protein, fat, dairy, I check it off. then I have a visual of what I can eat. This is totally easy and effective. Dont make it harder than it is. I couldn't be happier. I love stepping on the scale everyday and watching the pounds disappear. It's hard to believe, based on the quantity of food I'm eating.
