About the Author
Margarita S�nchez-Dom�nguez has a B.Sc. (with High Honors) in Industrial Chemistry from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Le�n (UANL, Monterrey, M�xico). She received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from University of Bristol (England) in 2004. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Institute Charles Sadron, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Strasbourg, France (2004-2006) and at the Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, Spanish National Research Council (IQAC-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain (2006-2010). She joined the Advanced Materials research center (CIMAV, S.C. Unidad Monterrey; M�xico) in 2010. She has published about 40 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, three book chapters and several patents. Her research goal is to understand the interfacial and colloidal properties of surfactant systems with the aim of using them for applications related with materials science, with a particular focus on their use as confined reaction media for the synthesis of advanced nanomaterials.

Carlos Rodriguez-Abreu earned BSc (Cum Laude) and MSc degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Los Andes (Venezuela), and received a PhD in Engineering in 2001 from Yokohama National University (Japan) as a Monbusho (Japan Ministry of Education) Scholarship grantee. He was associate professor at the University of Los Andes until 2003 and then held positions as JSPS postdoctoral fellow (Yokohama National University, Japan), Juan de la Cierva fellow (University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain) and Ramon y Cajal Research associate (Spanish Research Council, CSIC). He joined the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in 2010. He has published more than 80 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, four book chapters, and is currently senior editor of the Journal of Surfactants and Detergents (Springer). Dr. Rodr�guez-Abreu research interests are focused on soft matter and molecular self-assembly for the design and synthesis of nanomaterials.

About the Author

Raychelle Cassada Lohmann, MS, LPC, is a national board-certified counselor and licensed professional counselor. Lohmann has worked as a school counselor at middle and high school levels, and has helped hundreds of teens deal with feelings of frustration and anger. She has participated in extensive research on anger, and specializes in individual and group counseling for anger management. Our teen foster daughter needed a workbook like this to help her navigate her emotions concerning her abuse. I was searching for something not directed at children, yet not directed at older adults - this is perfect. I cannot speak as someone who has been through this situation, but the way the questions/exercises were worded are age appropriate and has good exercises to complete outside of open ended questions. While she is going to therapy, she is thankful she has something she can work on that is private and at home since therapy leaves her feeling emotionally open and vulnerable.

I made a mistake. Don't make the same one yourself.

I cannot warn you strongly enough against buying this book. Were it possible, I would rate this at 0 stars. Supposedly it is written by an experienced professor and lecturer. If this is in fact true, I hope he no longer is employed by any reputable university. As a sophomore who has been away from school for some time, I bought this sight unseen from Amazon.com, intending to use it as a refresher prior to the end of my military service and before I re-entered college. I have found it riddled with factual errors, lacking in its depth and misguided in its focus.
The book attempts to introduce the reader to chemistry, then produces a table with the first 11 elements and their valences, leaving the rest unknown. It does the same for molecular physics, then states that an electron is 2000 times more massive than a proton. It touches on astronomy, then claims the Grand Canyon was created by a meteorite impact. It tries to discuss Einstein's concept of space-time, but does absolutely nothing for relating the actual formulae or demonstrating the concept in any way to help the reader understand it. The book does however waste the paper to discuss what would happen if the sun's mass was turned into a black hole, and how even though Sol's mass is unchanged, it would mysteriously begin sucking in nearby stars. It talks about the speed of light and refraction through a clear substance, then mentions two theories, one which claims light travels slower through denser materials, one which claims light moves faster- and never states which is correct.
Patrick from Sydney apparently meant to review another book, because this is certainly not a 500 page textbook. The 240 pages of material are in a comfortably large font, with little enough real information that each chapter can be read without difficulty in about the same time it takes to read a magazine article. There is no math beyond the most basic of algebra, with a single page devoted to the definition of sine, cosine and tangent so that Snell's law of refraction can even be brought up. The primary focus of this book seems to be a cursorary history of physics, but I would prefer reading a decent encyclopedia's individual entries than the thin overview presented in "Teach Yourself Physics." For the irrelevant discussion on the future of power generation in England and "blue sky research" that was out of date when this book went to the publisher, I would rather pick up a copy of Nature, Smithsonian or Omni.
I thoroughly regret wasting my money and time on this book and urge you not to do so as well.

Mediocre Primer, Overselling his brand a bit much.

As a UX designer working on various websites and mobile apps I found the first five chapters useful in my design thinking but I also found a the coding and platform chapters to be weak and kind of sleazy.

Before I write anymore, I want you to know that I'm not going to critique Gamficiation Theory here as that has been done well enough elsewhere. I just want to talk about the book :)

So the first five chapters of the book are useful and meaty enough to get you on your way. For instance, it provides some compelling arguments to think about your analytics in terms of 'levels' and 'experience points' in order to see what they are accomplishing, even if you don't expose the information to them. Moreover, the first five chapters gave me enough to work with to implement some gamified elements into my next project. There's also a supplemental workbook PDF on the authors website that compiles all the exercises found in the book which I could see using at a project kickoff.

That being said, I do have some complaints about this book. First, I feel like the author was selling his website GamificationU a little too hard. In order to download the aforementioned workbook I had to fill out a contact form and in order to get the 'advanced' movies the author provides you have to follow him on twitter. If you ask me it feels a little too sleazy considering I've already paid for the book. If I really want to be on the mailing list or to follow you, I would.

My second issue has to do with "Chapter 7: Coding Basic Game Mechanics". I applaud the author for including a chapter that walks us through the code, I really do. But given the current rapid development of rails he should have forked the project on Github and been more thorough with his documentation. As such, I'm still trying to get the environment setup and running...I'll report back on that when I'm done.

My third and last issue, Chapter 8: Sponsored by Badgeville. This is new for me as I've never seen a chapter flat out sponsored and written by a third-party vendor in an O'Reilly book. Their service actually doesn't seem that bad but the author should have written the chapter himself if he felt it was so good. So the result is that it either feels like this guy doesn't mind pushing Badgeville on his readers or that he was lazy.

If you're looking for a book to get you up to speed on gamification and working it into your UX Design, give this a read. Just don't be surprised by some of the other parts...

There is not shortcut to understand Gamification in one book and this one is no help either!

You want to have a textbook to install Gamification for your own services, programs or company? Motivated by all the hype about how Gamification is the solution to get an almost lifelong customer engagement and many returning sales? You want to copy the success of Zynga, Nike+ and Groupon (note the absence of Foursquare in this list as I think it's rather a bad example of Gamification)? You want to find the secret recipe in just one easy to read book?

Why not buy and read the newest book from the "foremost expert on the subject of Gamification"? Well the title of this book by Gabe Zicherman sounds like the perfect solution for your motivations above, right? Well, I have bad news for you, there is no easy shortcut to understanding and implementing successful principles of Gamification for you! Nor is this book gonna help you in achieving all that is promised on the outside of the book. Ever heard of "No pain no gain?". That's right, as I will tell you here right away that you have to do it the hard way, buy and read a minimum dozen of books (some reading list provided later) and even then it's not guaranteed you've found the secret recipe.

So safe your 14.10 US$ (strange that Amazon is already cutting the price on a newly book almost in half, unless it's not a bestseller, right?) and invest that and some more dollars into various other books with more insights, more practicable tips, more take-aways than this book. Save yourself from the pain to read through some cheap advertising of the services of Badgeville.com as there are many other companies that offer the same service as them - at least two others start also with a B in their company name (hint). Save yourself from being mislead on some of the important topics of motivation (intrinsic vs extrinsic), psychology and game design as the author didn't manage to either explain them correctly or, as Sebastian Deterding hints in his review, shows a dangerous piece of pseudo-knowledge!

Go to a local bookstore where you have the chance of unwrapping this book and read randomly inside to see if the claims are right, make yourself your own picture of the quality of this book (the look inside of Amazon can't give show you all)

Sadly, like many other reviewers said too, the concept of Gamification is really intriguing and can be a difference maker in your marketing efforts, but isn't that easy to be achieved. Ignoring intrinsic motivation and just focusing on extrinsic motivation is giving you a short, hyped-up experience where your program is going to die much quicker than it was hyped-up in the beginning. I for one haven't fully mastered Gamification as indeed just reading one or two books from the self-claimed "foremost expert on Gamification" isn't providing you a shortcut to understand Gamification fully, it requires ready and understanding a variety of different books from Motivation (Daniel Pink eg Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us) to Game Design (Jesse Schell The Art of Game Design: A book of lenses, Raph Koster A Theory of Fun for Game Design, Jane McGonigal eg Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World) to Psychology (Johnmarshall Reeve eg Understanding Motivation and Emotion) as well as reading through the various excellent and free available online presentations (like Amy Jo Kim, Sebastian Deterding, Michael Wu eg)

I totally agree with the author of this book.Concerning the tongue.I enjoy all of Dr.Olukoya books. If you truly love God with all your heart,mind strength .Then you want to please him in everything you say and do! He is a man that God uses in deliverance.He brings conscious to the body of Christ.I thank God for him...May God continue to bless and use him in Jesus name.
