Little emphasis is given to non-rheological aspects of processes, for example, the design of machinery. The audience for which the book is intended is also dual in nature. It includes scientists and engineers whose work in the plastics industry requires some knowledge of aspects of rheology. Examples are the polymer synthetic chemist who is concerned with how a change in molecular weight will affect the melt viscosity and the extrusion engineer who needs to know the effects of a change in molecular weight distribution that might result from thermal degra� dation. The audience also includes post-graduate students in polymer science and engineering who wish to acquire a more extensive background in rheology and perhaps become specialists in this area. Especially for the latter audience, references are given to more detailed accounts of specialized topics, such as constitutive relations and process simulations. Thus, the book could serve as a textbook for a graduate level course in polymer rheology, and it has been used for this purpose.

One of the most concise and excellent books in rheology

I have found this book as the reader friendly in a wide spectrum of books available on polymer rheology. The authors have maintained a fine balance between mathematical theory and physical explanations. Therefore, one can get a feel of the subject while learning through this book. The language of the book is also lucid.

I highly recommend this book for someone who wants to know what the equations and the theories in rheology means.
Last but not least, considering the progress in last few years on theoretical front, this book needs a revision!

A Sci-Fi Masterpiece

Written in 1964, this might be the first novel depicting such a virtual reality - one so perfectly programmed that it's inhabitants are unaware that they are living in a simulated environment, and that they are themselves merely simulations.

But something starts to go wrong. Douglas Hall, one of the creators of the simulated world, begins to experience strange things happening in his own world, and in the attempt to make sense of it all he finds himself questioning his own sanity.

Sound familiar? There are some movie adaptations: The Thirteenth Floor and Welt am Draht, and I think most people will notice that possibly some ideas for the Matrix came from this classic sci-fi book.

This is the best book I've read in a long time!
It is well written, the author manages to construct believable reality in the book, dragging you in deeper into the plot as the story unfolds. I found it difficult to put this book down after I started reading it. It's a good mix of sci-fi, mystery, conspiracy, and a touch of romance.

A couple of things I'd like to note:
1. You'll have to get past the first couple of chapters as the author introduces his world, with quite a bit of made-up vocabulary. Although I really have to commend the author on his creativity for the words chosen to depict this highly technical simulator.

2. Reading this book really gave me the impression of a world that was a mix of the 1960's and some futuristic time. It is quite interesting to read older sci-fi to see what people imagined a future world would be like. In some ways the world in the book is certainly futuristic compared to the present, and in other ways it is really stuck in the 60's.

3. You might notice a few of the futuristic inventions to be things found in many sci-fi stories that came a little later.

I highly recommend this book to sci-fi fans! Excellent reading to be had here.

Great Futuristic Story from Pre-Internet Era.

I bought this novel because I've always wanted to watch Fassbinder's filmic adaptation "World on a Wire," which has just been released on Criterion DVD. I wasn't aware of a second adaptation of this book ("The Thirteenth Floor") until I was in the middle of reading it, but I'll have to see it, too (because I enjoy how adaptations work). I will be reviewing both soon... (Update: I have reviewed both filmic adaptations).

The story is slow paced in the beginning, and it takes some thought about what is going on - and that continues throughout the read. It has political and capitalist criticisms, as well as an immeshed love story. While reading it, several movies came to mind: the headset of "Brainstorm," the darkness and mystery of "Dark City," the environment of "Blade Runner," and a little bit of "The Matrix" (not as much as other reviewers seem to emphasize). It is well-rounded, but I became confused several times, having to go back and reread once in a while. In the end, I enjoyed the story, and I believe a sci-fi reader would, too. It has a film-noir feel to it.

It was written in 1962, and some of what was futuristic then seems to be working its way into the present. Personally, I find that most pre-CGI sci-fi writing has a more human level, which is apparent here. Psychological analysis may be fun with this one, especially the ending. Oh, how I want to become a pollster (sarcasm).

Great idea but writing is awful

I have watched the Thirteenth Floor (very good) and Welt am Draht (excellent) a few times, and finally decided to buy the book on which those movies are based. It hurts me to say but the writing is pretty bad. Okay, I obviously I know what the plot is all about but I'm about 1/3 through and you really want to slap the main protagonist constantly on the head for not realizing what the heck is going in. The author makes no attempt to explain why the main character, who is a key architect of the Simulacron system, is apparently brilliant enough to design a virtual reality but to stupid to see the parallels when everything that happens to him is exactly what happens to the avatars in the simulation. Both movies -- in their own ways -- managed to create an ominous, almost surreal atmosphere that sucked the viewers in, whereas this book leaves me stone cold -- and bored.

About the Author
ANGELA EVERITT is Reader in Social Welfare Sudies at the Social Welfare Research Unit at Newcastle Polytechnic, and has been in social work education for many years. She is particularly interested in practitioner research and engaging with practitioners in collaborative research and evaluation projects.

PAULINE HARDIKER is Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Work at the University of Leicester. She has undertaken research and published in relation to probation, chronic illness, child care and social work theory.

JANE LITTLEWOOD is Lecturer in Social Policy and Administration at the Loughborough University of Technology. She has conducted research in social work issues for a number of years and has contributed to a variety of publications in this ara. She is the author of Aspects of Grief: Bereavement in Adult Life.

AUDREY MULLENDER is Director of the Centre for Applied Social Studies at the University of Durham. She is a qualified social worker, with a background in social services. She has maintained a practice involvement during her teaching career, particularly through links with the advocacy movement. She has a special interest in empowering service users, and is the co-author, with David Ward, of Self-Directed Groupwork: Users Take Action for Empowerment.

Legal scholars tend to assume that law matters; i.e., that people seek to comport their behavior with applicable rules of law. In what is probably the best sociological study of the role of law in dispute resolution, Robert Ellickson demonstrates that disputes are often resolved without recourse to law and, even more important, in ways different than they would have been resolved in court.
Ellickson begins with a richly detailed case study: Boundary and cattle trespass disputes in Shasta County, California. After reviewing the Shasta County experience, Ellickson relates his findings to a theoretical framework grounded in economics and psychology. The book thus combines the best of both theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of law.
Legal scholarship is increasingly concerned with the way social norms control behavior. This is the book that started that debate. It deserves to be read by anybody who is interested in law, economics, or dispute resolution.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Order Without Law studies why, and under what circumstances, people accept a body of rules when there is no written law establishing those rules, and occasionally when the written law contradicts those rules. To answer this question, Professor Robert Ellickson settled into a long and detailed field study of the attitudes of cattle ranchers in Shasta County, California. His primary focus was on the informal rules governing boundary fences; who pays to build, who pays to maintain, who accepts the risk of stray cattle, and so forth. While his geographical focus was narrow, it was impressively deep, involving dozens of personal interviews and detailed reviews of public records. Ellickson explains why he believes that two current theories, law-and-economics and law-and-society, are both inadequate. He creates his own useful taxonomy of rules, rule makers, and rule enforcers. He offers hypotheses to predict future situations when people will more likely accept unwritten rules. Designed for professionals who deal daily in human behavior, such as sociologists, anthropologists, and lawyers, Order Without Law remains accessible to the general reader. One part was difficult to follow: the extended analysis of the Prisoner's Dilemma and its variations. But overall Order Without Law is a valuable addition to law and the social sciences.

An excellent inquiry into the role of ordinary neighborliness as superior to government and laws in resolving disputes, "Order Without Law" shows us, in an understandable American community, how unimportant government and formal laws are to most daily life and minor conflicts that arise. Written by a lawyer and professor, it sometimes has a strong legal brief flavor, but for those of us who favor liberty and oppose forcible imposition of will through "government," this book is support for the idea that government is actually superfluous to ordinary life.

Informed by recent work on orientalism and colonialism, this book unravels the significance of these misrepresentations of Egypt in the Greek cultural imagination in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E.

Looking in particular at issues of identity, otherness, and cultural anxiety, Phiroze Vasunia shows how Greek authors constructed an image of Egypt that reflected their own attitudes and prejudices about Greece itself. He focuses his discussion on Aeschylus Suppliants; Book 2 of Herodotus; Euripides' Helen; Plato's Phaedrus, Timaeus, and Critias; and Isocrates' Busiris. Reconstructing the history of the bias that informed these writings, Vasunia shows that Egypt in these works was shaped in relation to Greek institutions, values, and ideas on such subjects as gender and sexuality, death, writing, and political and ethnic identity. This study traces the tendentiousness of Greek representations by introducing comparative Egyptian material, thus interrogating the Greek texts and authors from a cross-cultural perspective. A final chapter also considers the invasion of Egypt by Alexander the Great and shows how he exploited and revised the discursive tradition in his conquest of the country.

Firmly and knowledgeably rooted in classical studies and the ancient sources, this study takes a broad look at the issue of cross-cultural exchange in antiquity by framing it within the perspective of contemporary cultural studies. In addition, this provocative and original work shows how Greek writers made possible literary Europe's most persistent and adaptable obsession: the barbarian.
