Irreverent cult classic delivered in style
By Dan Pace (feral atom)
Collects Not Brand Echh 1-13 (10 reprinted stories from previous issues of the title). Besides 406 pages from the issues, we also get a 31 pages of extras. The light-hearted tales that appeared in other Marvel titles are also included. From Spider-man Annual #1, "How Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Create Spider-man", fromn Daredevil Annual #1, "At the Stroke of Midnight", from Fantastic Four Annual #5, "This is a Plot?", from Sgt Fury Annual #4, "Gary and Dick Up Front", from Avengers Annual #2, "Avenjerks Assemble!", from Spider-man Annual #5, "Here We Go-a-Plotting".

Also included are the Bullpen Bulletins announcement of the title, three 1967 house ads, another informative introduction from Roy Thomas, production photostats from Not Brand Echh #3 "Charlie America", original Marie Severin pencils from NBE #8 with margin notes, unused Marie Severin cover for NBE#12 (redrawn faces and moved characters), original page 3 from NBE #12 showing Charlie America accidentally burning the flag with a cigarette. Instead a shot of Charlie peeling potatoes was used. Finally, all four covers of NBE reprint title Crazy are shown at quarter size, including the unpublished #4.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Not Brand Echh was a humorous take on super-heroes. The title was a word-play from comparison commercials that used the ubiquitous "Brand X" out of fear of naming their rival and giving them free advertising. In Marvel letters pages and Bullpen Bulletins, they would playfully refer to DC as "Brand Echh", as well as the "Distinguished Competition". NBE takes the DC jokes to an extreme and often has others in the flow of stories, such as "Decidedly Cross" and "Diabolically Called".

NBE is revered for its irreverence. I've read letters pages referencing some of the in-jokes from it. Irving Forbush was a fictitious office go-fer referred to in the letters pages and sometimes in the creator credits. In NBE, he's finally "shown" (except his face is never revealed). He now becomes "Forbush-man" and has a series of misadventures at the expense of our other super-heroes in satire.

As for the content, I think the first 2 or 3 issues start out a bit slowly. They were good but not as good as what followed.

Issue 1 has the Fantastical Four facing Doctor Bloom having stolen the Silver Burper's powers (lampooning FF 57-60), Too-Gone Kid with the Ghostly Rider, Kid Cold, Rawhead Kid and Madd Hogg, the Human Scorch vs the Sunk-mariner (poking fun at Marvel Mystery #9 from 1940) with added guest-star Chaplain America, and, to round out the issue, Sgt Furious.

Issue 2 gets other companies' characters on the hot seat, featuring Spidey-man meets Gnatman and Rotten, Magnut Robot Biter vs Ironed man, and Knock Furious, Agent of S.H.E.E.S.H. meets the Blunder Agents.

Issue 3 started a run of thematic issues with this one being a retelling of origin stories for the Mighty Sore, the Inedible Bulk, and Charlie America.

Issue 4 features "the bad guys win", with Electrico and Scaredevil, Krank and Prince No-More, and Magneat-o vs the Echhsmen.

Issue 5 has the Origin of Forbush-man, Revengers vs Charlie America and Thung vs Bulk. Gene Colan does an amazing job on the Revengers story. Throughout this collection, his artwork is top notch.

Issue 6 features an all-romance collection, with Human Scorch marrying Gristle of the Unhumans guest-starring Sandyman, Dr Deranged and Wotta Woman in "Best Side Story", and Spidey-man's secret love in "With This Ring I Thee Web". All of these are hilariously well-done.

Issue 7 is another Origins issue, this time showing extra-length tales of the Fantastical Four and Stuporman. This issue is awesome. Stuporman is an excellent take on the man from Kreepton, paying slight homage to the MAD #4 story "SuperDuperMan". (To tell the truth, I like the Marble Comics version better.)

Issue 8 is probably my favorite issue, with Forbush-man trying to join a super-team in a framing story. He first tries the Revengers when Dang the Conqueror attacks. Next, he attempts to become an Agent of S.H.E.E.S.H. while they go up against the Yellow Paw. In the last tale, he tries out for the Echhsmen with Magneat-o, Toadstool, Slicksilver and the Scarlett Wench. The Beatles make an appearance as well.

Issue 9 started a run of Giant-Sized 68-pagers (for only 25!!) has Sunk-mariner vs Bulk, Casey at the Bat with Bulk filling in for Casey, the Mean Hornet (which I might have enjoyed more without the bald racism for Plato), Super-Hero Greeting Cards, Boney and Claude, Arch and the Teen-stalk, and Captain Marvin vs the Scent-ry. I liked the first and the last two, with the others not really resonating with me.

Reprint #10 has the cover and "this is a contents page?" reproduced.

#11 has King Konk 68 (with the FF, Revengers, and Phantom Beagle guest-starring), Superhero Daydreams, Knock Furious (lampooning Steranko's work), It's a Mad, Mad Ave, Puns of Will Bonnett, Ivanshmoe, Sunk-mariner vs Aqualung Man, Spidey-man, Autie Goose Rhymes, and "How to be a Comic Book Artist."

#12 has Comiclot with Sore and Spidey-man, Puzzle pages, Unhumans done in the style of Sunday's comics, Sgt Peppers double page spread album cover and two pages of lampooned lyrics, the Revengers with a fourth-wall breaking "serious" page done by Big John Buscema, Charlie America's Family Album, "My Search for True Love" with Medoozy going through Hollywood more times than Elizabeth Taylor, Marble's own Drawing Lessons pages, and Frankenstein sicksty-nine.

The Sunday's Comics versions of the Unhumans was my favorite story in NBE. The artists and writers did a fantastic job of capturing the original strips look and feel. Is the art really all done by Tom Sutton? If so, he did a remarkable job, in my opinion.

The last issue contains the Origin of the Simple Surfer, Liltin' Limericks, Who Says a Carnival Has to be Good (chock full of Marble heroes), Guess What's Coming to Dinner with Bulk and Mangrok, Cheap Shrills album cover, some fake ads, Rent-a-Super-Hero, Dr Deranged vs Deadpan, Bill Dubay and Stan Lee collaborate on "Adult Super-Hero Daydreams", Marble Valentine's cards, and the Return of Forbush-man as a fitting end to close out the title.

Once again, Marvel outdoes itself in high-quality production and restoration of classic comics, presenting to us a trove of comics and cultural history. If you're a fan of MAD and super-heroes, I highly recommend getting this Masterwork.

FORBUSH FOREVER
By hudd
KIRBY, Heck, Colan, Marie Severin, and the whole Bullpen go superhero crazy in this long-awaited omnibus of satire, farce, and plain ol' FUN. It's a feast of hyperbolic art and way-out weird wonder, with jabs at Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. B.O.Y.S. ; digs at Russ Manning's robot-munchin' man of the future; as well as bustin' the Batguy , slammin' Superdude, and jumpin' on the whole Justus League at DuhC. However, those marvelous maniacs always dished out their malicious mayhem with the most gusto to those merry-marching morons at Marvel itself. Now you young pups may not get all the political and cultural allusions from those groovy days, BABY, and find the" humor" rather lacking; however, the artwork alone is worth the trip. And for the comic fanboy historians out there, these are the FIRST EVER -MULTIVERSAL- INTER-COMPANY CROSSOVERS in the entire history of comics in the known universe. 'nuff said. Excelsior. NO-PRIZES not included. Bazinga!

With the renewed interest inthe history of witches and witchcraft, this timely book provides anintroduction to this fascinating topic, informed by the main trends of new thinking on the subject.Beginning with a discussion of witchcraft in the early modern period, and charting the witch panics that took place at this time, the author goes on to look at thehistorical debate surrounding the causes of the legal persecution of witches.Contemporary views of witchcraft put forward by judges, theological writers and the medical profession are examined, as is the place ofwitchcraft in the popular imagination. Review

"Altogether a fascinating and stimulating read" Local History

From the Back Cover

Over the past decade there has been a tremendous upsurge inbothpopular interest and original writing on history of witchcraft and witch - hunting in the early modern period. Thisactivity has shown just how complexthe subject is. It is hard for those coming new to itto pick their way through a mass of information and of competing interpretations.

`Witchcraft in Early Modern England' introduces readers to the current state of debate and to future directions for investigation. It covers such fundamental topics as:

*witchcraft as an intellectual and theological problem

*neighbourly tensionsrelated to witchcraft accusations

* the issue of witchcraft and gender

* the problem of the decline of witch - persecution.

The book is characterised throughout by a straightforward approach which guides the reader through the sometimes difficult details of this fascinating but much - misunderstood subject. The interpretative text is accompanied by a selection of documentary extracts, some of them never previously published, which allows the reader to get to grips with witchcraft as it was experienced in the past, and to understand how historians have constructed their interpretations of early modern witchcraft.

James Sharpe is Professor of History at York University.A leading authority on witchcraft, his many publications include `The Bewitching of Anne Gunter' (2000).

About the Author

Jim Sharpe is Professor of History at the University of York. He has written widely on the history of witchcraft.

An indispensable volume that shows how to succeed in business by using the Bible and its lessons as a source of inspiration and guidance n 1990, David L. Steward founded his company, Worldwide Technology, Inc., on a shoestring budget and borrowed money, well aware of the high-risk nature of the venture he was undertaking. Despite the fact that he was a novice entrepreneur, he was certain he would succeed. Steward believed intensely that God wouldn't let him down.

Doing Business by the Good Book shares the inspiring lessons culled straight from the Bible, that Steward used to build his privately held billion-dollar company into a global information technology enterprise.

From Publishers Weekly
Jesus' teachings were not meant to be spoken only on Sunday, writes Steward, CEO of World Wide Technology Inc., the world's largest African-American-owned company. Rather, those teachings were meant to be implemented everywhere, including the workplace. In this book, Steward shares 52 biblical principles in short, easy-to-read chapters that can be digested once a week for a full year or devoured in one sitting. Steward draws heavily on his own knowledge of building a high-tech company from the ground up, and also his corporate experiences at FedEx and Union Pacific. He has a real knack for helping readers see how biblical principles relate to those experiences and to contemporary business issues. Even the trendy notion of "branding" is placed thoughtfully with a relevant Scripture (Matthew 12:33: "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit."). Christian businesspeople who want a solid introduction to biblical ethics in the workplace will particularly enjoy his fine chapters on accountability, enthusiasm, customer satisfaction and networking.

Where They Found Her: A Novel, by Kimberly McCreight

“McCreight creates a world that pulls us in completely and genuinely, with characters that can enrage, amuse, and fill us with empathy. It’s a thrilling novel.”—GILLIAN FLYNN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

Motherhood hasn’t been easy for Molly Sanderson, and the years since the loss of her second child have been a particular struggle. But six months after moving from New York City to sophisticated Ridgedale, New Jersey, she’s finally enjoying life again, as mother of a five-year-old daughter and fledgling arts reporter for the local paper. But this tenuous stability is threatened when the body of a newborn is found in the woods behind prestigious Ridgedale University and Molly is assigned the story. Over the objections of her increasingly concerned husband, Molly dives into reporting, determined to prove herself by uncovering the truth. What she finds is a decades-old trail of dark secrets that winds through every corner of the town.

Told from the perspectives of Molly; Barbara, wife of Ridgedale’s police chief, whose faltering son is unraveling her picture-perfect life; and a sixteen-year old high school dropout, Sandy, who is dealing with her wayward mother, Where They Found Her reveals that the tragic truth about what happened to the baby lies at the unexpected intersection of these three very different women’s lives. It is a taut and profoundly moving novel about mothers and daughters—the fierce bonds that unite them and the deceit that can drive them apart. But most of all it’s about the heartbreakingly high price of history. The past can be artfully denied, but never truly buried.

From School Library Journal
Another thriller for adults that teens will devour. As she did in Reconstructing Amelia (HarperCollins, 2013), McCreight explores how the mistakes made by parents when they themselves were teens are revealed to their children and the devastation they can wreak. Ridgedale looks like the perfect college town and reporter Molly certainly hopes it is the place where she and her husband can recover from the devastating stillbirth of their second child. But when Molly's first assignment in their new town is to cover the discovery of a dead newborn in the campus woods, she has to quickly figure out if her investigation will bring her closure or return her to the depths of grief from which she's just recovered. While the protagonist reports on the gruesome crime, teen Sandy is desperate to find her hard-partying mom before they're evicted. In their parallel searches, Molly and Sandy begin to uncover some very dark secrets in Ridgedale's past. McCreight plants seeds of doubt in all of the protagonists, from the police chief to a high-strung soccer mom. Although some of the plot and the twist ending are slightly predictable, readers will keep flipping through pages. VERDICT Young adult fans of Jodi Picoult or Elizabeth Berg will enjoy this mystery.—Meghan Cirrito, formerly of Brooklyn Public Library

twisty and captivating, but way too many characters to keep track of
By Melissa Joynson
I LOVED Reconstructing Amelia, so when I found out Kimberly McCreight had recently published a new book, Where They Found Her, I was super excited about reading it. When it was delivered on Friday, I immediately delved into the twisty story and did not stop reading until it was finalized.

The setting of Where They Found Her is Ridgedale, New Jersey, a small college town. Molly Sanderson and her husband are recent transplants with Justin's new teaching position in the English department and Molly branching out as a reporter for the local newspaper. She is still grieving the loss of their second child, a stillborn daughter. Filling in for another reporter, Molly is called out to report on a body that has been discovered near a bridge, adjacent to the college. When she learns that the body is that of a newborn baby girl, she must not only face her continued grief over her loss, but also report the story to the best of her ability.

Where They Found Her is narrated by three women: Molly, Barbara, the mother of one of Molly's daughter's classmates, and Sandy, a teenager whose drug addicted mother has gone missing. Intermingled are flashbacks from other characters, Molly's new reports on the case, and transcripts from Molly's therapy sessions following the death of her baby. There are a TON of characters thrown at the reader in a very short time, along with numerous details, so it almost seems necessary to keep notes in order to keep track of all the characters, how they are related, and how each piece fits into the puzzle. Characters who do not, at first, appear to be part of the overall picture end up playing vital roles as the story unfolds. Little snippets are dropped and it is ultimately up to the reader to put all the parts together. It, at times, was a bit confusing.

While I really enjoyed the story (evidently, since I finished it in less than a day), I think the biggest issue was that there were just so many different stories in the novel that McCreight was trying to have come together. At times, it felt a little forced. Overall, I give Where They Found Her a 7.5 out of 10, but trust me when I say that should not stop you from reading the novel. It is still very captivating. :)

A soap opera, not a mystery/thriller
By Steven Meisel
I purchased this book because I enjoyed reading McCreight's previous book, Reconstructing Amelia. Unfortunately, Where They Found Her is a poor effort and is not worth reading. I had high hopes at the beginning but, although short, the middle quickly bogged down. It picked up towards the end but by that time I didn't really care.

The book is part mystery/thriller but primarily soap opera. There is extensive focus on small town relationships of several women & girls with their husbands/boyfriends and with each other. The characters are lifeless, universally unlikable, and shallow. I found that I didn't care about any of them. While I sometimes look past that if the plot is engaging, this plot is trite, predictable, and boring.

I will not read future books by this author.

She tricked me. Yay!
By Laney Smith - Author
I have always been a fan of murder mysteries. This one does not disappoint. I loved everything about this book, from the front cover, all the way to the back cover. McCreight leads you on and lets you think you know exactly what's happening. She had me going all the way to the end. At the end, she pulls a fast one on us and throws some wicked curve balls. You think you've got it, but trust me, it's a fun read. This story is believable, all the way down to the comment threads within the story. If you enjoy those "gotcha" moments with your suspense, I strongly recommend this book. Kimberly McCreight has an easy-to-read writing style, with relatable, likeable characters (...and, some not so likeable characters. Who doesn't know that "over-the-top," judgmental mother with the "perfect" family?). The story line is well developed and the twists and turns at the end are such an amazing reward for your time investment. Great story! I give this read 5 bright, shiny stars. I will be reading more books from this author.

Good read even if characters are deeply flawed
By Tawa Witko
Okay, I am predominately an American Literature fan and like a lot of English Literature as well. I have never had a desire to read any French Literature. Not sure why just haven't. I picked up this book because a movie was made based on it and the cast is pretty stellar and if I know a movie is based on a book I will always read the book first. It was a fairly easy read although DuRoy clearly is a scoundrel and not likeable one bit and the fact that he had no moral compass was difficult to stomach at times. It is difficult to enjoy a book when the main character or characters have no redeeming qualities especially when they don't get their just rewards in the end. But in spite of this I enjoyed the prose and story and if anything it reiterates today's society as well in that sometimes in life the scoundrels finish first.

a glimpse into the inner workings of a scoundrel..
By micah strawn
i was a fan of maupassant's "the necklace" but never bothered to look into his other writings.. i was surprised to see he had written bel ami, which is now a movie.. i tried watching the movie, thinking it would be interesting, but its more uncomfortable than anything.. i couldn't make it past 15 minutes, but this isn't about the movie.. being a female i was used to scoundrels and their ways.. this book gave me a bit of insight as to the mind workings of one... yea, it was written a long time ago, but the themes in love and love making are pretty much the same throughout history.. its kind of terrible to think that there are people like that and a little humbling to know that people like that existed even then.. i know a lot of people like to think it was a more innocent age back in the day, but there was a lot of scandal then as now.. i don't desire to read this book again in the near future, but it was engaging and thought provoking to me.. it gave me a lot to think about my past relationships and fodder for me to over analyze the relationships friends that in relationships with scoundrels now.. its a good read, but its not a feel good book.. and the end, like many of maupassant's stories, is quite sad..

The Reality of Love
By helty
Bel Ami is the pet name given to the main character, Georges Duroy, by his favorite love interest and her daughter. In my opinion, Duroy is no more of a scoundrel than the women who love him.

The least attractive thing that he does is to marry a young, nieve girl in the end. He is experienced enough to allow this young girl all of the time that she needs to become a women. He is patient and willing to spoil her until she comes around to his way of thinking.
