About the Author

Ian Worthington is Professor of History at the University of Missouri. He has published 15 sole-authored and edited books and over 100 articles and essays on Greek history, epigraphy and oratory. In 2005 he won the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creativity in the Humanities, in 2007 the Student-Athlete Advisory Council Most Inspiring Professor Award and in 2010 the William H. Byler Distinguished Professor Award.

A guide to Alexander (the Great)

Alexander the Great: A Reader, edited by Ian Worthington, introduces one to the complexities of Alexander and the studies about him, and as expected naturally it proceeds on a more or less treaded path. "The Question of Macedonian Ethnicity" by Worthington himself, pages 23-26, is colored by the injection of a "Slavic factor" at the very beginning of the narrative, a modern intrusion into the studies of the ancient Macedonians which finds no support in the ancient sources. On the other hand, Alexander the Great: a Reader, a guide more exactly, does update in a way the state of Alexander studies, at least for an anglophone reading public.
All said, the coverage is more than adequate: (1) The sources, (2) Alexander's influences and the Macedonian background, (3) Alexander's aims, (4) Alexander's battles and generalship, (5) Alexander and the Greeks, (6) Alexander and the Persian empire, (7) Alexander, India and the Gedrosian desert, (8) From mass marriage to death, (9) Alexander and the 'unity of mankind', (10) Alexander and deification, (11) Alexander and conspiracies, and (12) Alexander: the 'Great'?
Naturally, the preceding are tinted by modern interpretations and by views of the ancient Greeks-Macedonians, although ground for such an argument can be extracted from the ancient sources. On the other hand, a preoccupation so-to-speak of GreekMacedonian obscures the Macedonians' role in the development of Greek civilization and perpetuates a dichotomy, which may be there from the sources, but makes no positive contribution to a more realistic understanding of the ancient Macedonians, as a component of Greece beyond its narrow, classical geographic perception (Actium-Thermopylae/or Thessaly). And this concept is best illustrated, for example, by Alexander's "Macedonia and the rest of Greece" (Arrian, 2.14.4).

Excellent Source

This is definitely a great compilation of writings about Alexander The Great and the society, government and era that he lived in. I have only read a few sections and have learned a lot more than what is written in most other books on this subject. This is definitely not a general overview, it is a very detailed book. If you've already read other books and want a deeper knowledge of Alexander The Great and his times then you will find this book very appealing.

About the Author

Adam Mansbach's novels include The End of the Jews, winner of the California Book Award, and the best-selling Angry Black White Boy, a San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of 2005. His fiction and essays have appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the Believer, Granta, the Los Angeles Times, and many other publications. He was the 2010-2011 New Voices Professor of Fiction at Rutgers University. His daughter, Vivien, was his inspiration for Go the F*** to Sleep.

Ricardo Cortes has illustrated books about marijuana (It's Just a Plant), electricity, the Jamaican bobsled team, Chinese food, and A Secret History of Coffee, Coca & Cola. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine, the Village Voice, the San Francisco Chronicle, and on the O'Reilly Factor and CNN. Love it! Parents Inner Monologue On Every Page!

I suppose I should start with - This is NOT a childrens bedtime book! It is a book for parents whose children refuse to go to sleep! I was shocked to find that some reviewers, apparently completely forgot to read the title of the book before purchasing. Subsequently, they also seem to have been horrificly ambushed by the fact that they have absolutely no sense of humor. For those parents who do have a sense of humor and who may not find profanity particularly offensive and who live in the real world. And have real kids. This book is definitely a 3am win!
That being said...This is a totally F-ing amazing book! It's real, overworked, frustrated beyond belief, about to loose your mind at 3am, inner parent monologue. I originally bought it for a friend who was having some serious issues getting her little one to sleep. She called me after one particularly rough night & thanked me profusely for giving her the book. I guess it's nice to know that you're not alone in your child's bedtime struggles. It may not actually be all your fault and you may have a relatively normal child & are not in fact a horrible parent. A little laughter, and vulgar support, can go an awfully long way. I've since given it as a gift many times. I plan on continuing to gift it as long as the people around me continue to not learn from the couple before them and keep having babies. Who then refuse to sleep. And so on & so forth.
*If you haven't already you MUST Google the celebrity reads of this book! Jennifer Garner & Samuel L. Jackson are laugh out loud funny. Samuel L. Jackson should narrate a book for every single stage of life, from being born to the grave. We'd come in & go out laughing! This book is one that will be shared from one exhausted, fed up, delusional, red eyed, sleep deprived parent to another. 'Cause sometimes all you can do is F-ing laugh. At yourself and at each other. Also, the pictures are really beautiful.

The illustrations are very pretty and the story is just hilarious

I ordered this book as a humorous gift for an expecting, first-time parent. I couldn't resist, so I opened the book when it arrived and read through each page. The illustrations are very pretty and the story is just hilarious! I loved that the lines changed a bit with each page and the author's rhyming and cadence were perfect. It got a lot of laughs at the shower, with many seasoned parents responding with lots of nods and strolls down Memory Lane. It should go without saying that this book has A LOT of expletive language and should be treated as the ADULT book that it is, since there were apparently people who were upset about the language and it being inappropriate for children. I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely buy it again!

I have three children, ages 2, 7 am daughter 9. One is a special needs child- ASD and CHD; one is Dyslexic, and one is a smartass (gets it from me). By the end of the night, I'm ready for my solitude. This book cracks me up and makes me feel a little more human in the fact that I'm not the only one who is at the end of their rope at bedtime... this book definitely puts a smile on my face, reminds me it's a temporary situation, and had me laughing until the very last line. I read it to my children and substitute choice words for others (cuss words), and they enjoy it just as much.

Greenberg's masterpiece

The book is fantastic! The text is very precise, yet friendly and easy to follow; the problems and examples are designed very carefully. I've seen his new book (advanced engineering mathematics) but I think this old book is more student friendly. He explains everything from the very beginning and you have this good feeling that both you and the author are trying to explore things together.

The section on Linear Spaces is great. I wanted to study functional analysis and this section was a great help since it gives you a "feeling" about an abstract subject. I also enjoyed his rigorous treatment of PDE's. He mentions that when you want to apply the boundary conditions; this makes sense in the "limit sense" since the boundary is not included in the domain of your differential equation. This has a always been a question to me as a beginner and I found the answer in this book. I haven't seen books like Kreyszig or Myint-U or Farlow address such issues, yet I should say all of them are great.

I studied this book when I was taking a graduate engineering mathematics class at UT Austin. I had already studied Kreyszig; that is also very nice and easy to follow but Greenberg's book is deeper. If you are studying the subject for the first time, I think you need another book, like Kreyszig, as a supplement. Myint-U is also a good supplement for the PDE part and the method of characteristics which is briefely discussed here.

Greenberg's book is a masterpiece! I want to send him a greeting card and thank him for his great work!

Easy read

It is rare when you find a textbook which helps you to learn a subject. Foundations of Applied Mathematics is one of them. Prof. Greenberg wrote a book which explains the material so well I find it an "easy read."

Why the small font size?

No doubt this is a great book. It covers diverse topics with many worked out examples. The discussions are very clear and student friendly. My only issue is the very small font size which makes the reading tedious. I don't understand why the publisher selected small font size compared with the original version?

Andre Rabe's "Imagine" is a book saturated with the very presence of God. Each page emanates Jesus' very being and life as Andre unfolds many mysteries buried in seemingly dry Christian doctrine. Never critical or judgemental of traditional Christian thinking, Andre gives voice to many of our own secret questions and struggles relating to the Bible and Christianity. He intelligently offers such a fresh perspective on understandings relating to creation, the fall, origins of evil, the law, redemption and the incarnation.

Part of Andre's artistry is in weaving through much common and loaded Christian jargon and presenting us with an almost "new language". This "new language" immediately disarms any religious filters we have and draws us into a sacred place of intimacy and healing almost effortlessly. We begin to become aware of not only our religious filters, but also of the lenses with which we view the gospel of Jesus Christ and the reasons why we hold such views.

Andre exposes commonly held theological misconceptions by examining the original Hebrew and Greek as well as by taking a candid view of what we have always believed and exposing the implications of these beliefs in light of Jesus as the complete and final word of God.

Chapter 8, entitled "The contradiction of the cross" will certainly cause many to rethink what they have always understood by the sacrifice and atonement of Jesus. Clarity: the quality of being easily understood

Sometimes it feels like you're walking through a house of mirrors when you take time to consider the various teachings within the church and other religions. Each mirror is different, reflecting a unique image of yourself by either exaggerating or diminishing various parts. Each mirror offers it's own version of you. Most of us would not be fooled by an image in a house of mirrors, because we would know that the image we saw was not a true representation of who we are. But the tragedy for some people is they accept the distorted version of themselves taught through religion and live accordingly. As a result they find themselves frustrated and discouraged with life and they wonder why the LIFE found in Jesus is so elusive. In Imagine Andre provides a mirror that brings clarity to the image that we are beholding. It neither exaggerates nor diminishes the subject but reveals the true substance of a believer -Christ in you.
