Philip Conrod�has authored, co-authored and edited over two dozen computer programming books and tutorials over the past 30 years. Perfect for teachers and students, home or the classroom!

What is "Beginning Java for High School Students" ... and how it works.

The lessons "Beginning Java for High School Students" are a highly organized and well-indexed set of tutorials meant for children aged 10 and above. JCreator, a specific IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is used to create both Console and GUI( Graphical User Inteface applications).

The tutorials provide the benefit of completed age-appropriate applications for high school students - fully documented projects from the teacher's or parent's point of view. That is, while full solutions are provided for the adult's benefit, the projects are presented in an easy-to-follow set of lessons explaining the rational for the form layout, coding design and conventions, and specific code related to the problem. High school learners may follow tutorials at their own pace. Every bit of the lesson is remembered as it contributes to the final solution. The finished product is the reward, but the student is fully engaged and enriched by the process. This kind of learning is often the focus of teacher training. Every computer science teacher knows what a great deal of preparation is required for projects to work for senior students. With these tutorials, the research behind the projects is done by an author who understands the classroom experience. That is extremely rare!

Graduated Lessons for Every Project ... Lessons, examples, problems and projects. Graduated learning. Increasing and appropriate difficulty... Great results.

With these projects, there are lessons providing a comprehensive, student-friendly background on the programming topics to be covered. Once understood, concepts are easily applicable to a variety of applications. Then, specific examples are drawn out in the JCreator environment. Then specific Java coding for the example is provided so that the user can see all the parts of the project come together for the finished product.

By presenting lessons in this graduated manner, students are fully engaged and appropriately challenged to become independent thinkers who can come up with their own project ideas and design their own forms and do their own coding. Once the process is learned, then student engagement is unlimited! I have seen literacy improve dramatically because students cannot get enough of what is being presented.

Indeed, lessons encourage accelerated learning - in the sense that they provide an enriched environment to learn computer science, but they also encourage accelerating learning because students cannot put the lessons away once they start! Computer science provides this unique opportunity to challenge students, and it is a great testament to the authors that they are successful in achieving such levels of engagement with consistency.

My History with Kidware Software products.

Having used Kidware Software tutorials for the past decade, I have to say that I could not have achieved the level of success which is now applied in the variety of many programming environments which are currently of considerable interest to kids! Enjoyable look at Russia's flagship manned spacecraft

After David Baker's super-detailed Haynes manuals on NASA's Mars Rovers and the Apollo 13 missions, I had high expectations for this book. I've been a little letdown by Haynes' offerings this last year, but this volume on Russia's flagship manned spacecraft is a step in the right direction. The first quarter provides a concise history of the early Soviet manned space program, including the Vostok and Voskhod missions, and the development of the Soyuz spacecraft. The remainder is a technical history of Soyuz, focusing on the continued design and development of the different Soyuz variants, its role in the abortive Russian moon landing program, its potential military applications, and its current role as an orbital taxi cab.

The highlight of this book are the four technical features, including a 30-page technical description of the modern Soyuz TMA-M, a look at rendezvous and docking techniques, a brief history of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, and a summary of the Progress cargo freighter. These parts are really the meat of the book - the bits that make it a "workshop manual" and not just a decent history. Dozens of detailed technical drawings from the original Soyuz manuals are included, along with close-up views of spacecraft components and detailed descriptions of how the different systems work.

Overall, the Soyuz "workshop manual" makes a very good, although not superb, inclusion into the rather small library of English-language books on the Soviet & Russian manned space program. Visually, the book is superb, with plenty of line drawings, diagrams, historical photographs, specially created CGI illustrations, and color views of Soyuz hardware. David Baker's writing has improved over the years, and he strikes a good balance between historical background and technical details here. My main gripe is that it ends rather abruptly - the focus here mainly being on the early years of the Soyuz program, the last 28 years getting a 9-page wrap-up at the end. This might be a reflection of the craft's overall reliability, or of editorial constraints on the part of Haynes.

Recommended, with a couple of minor reservations, for serious manned spaceflight buffs.

Many Great photos, diagrams and details

Many Great photos, diagrams and details of space craft. There are a few details shown in Russian language too, The History of the Soyuz is covered from start to finish. It included the wiring Diagram of the Spacecraft on page 81-I added common USA Electrical text description to diagram on the attached Photo. I was looking for this Electrical Diagram on the internet and could not It-so I was glad it was in this Book...It also included the rocket system of the launch vehicle.

I understand a lot of information was secret back in the day and some parts may still be secret- so it hard to get information that makes sense. This book did a great job with the information available. It's simple and easy to read. If you are looking for a lot of detail information of each system this is not that kind of book. It's general in nature but at an adult level.

I worked on the Apollo spacecraft as a Electronic/electrical Technician and later as an research engineer. I wanted to compare their spacecraft with ours. I attached a photo of me by Apollo 15 at the Downey Apollo factory taken in April of 1967.

It is interesting- this Soyuz spacecraft was design to go to the moon but never made it. But 900 of these vehicles were made and are still being made to service the International Space Station while our Apollo spacecraft and Space Shuttle are in museums. Oh Well.

Anyway this book is excellent.

Meets My Level of Interest

I'm only in the middle of reading it (though I have scanned ahead), so I'll reserve a full critique. However, I've already learned an enormous amount about this enduring workhorse spacecraft and anticipate learning a lot more before I'm finished. In scanning the rest, it seems to present much less about Salyut and particularly MIR than might be desired, though to be fair those are distinct spacecraft that I'd be pleased to see get their own volume(s). At that, this one dovetails nicely into the volume already available on the ISS (which does go some into MIR, but not nearly enough).

Novel From A Filmaker That Reads Like A Movie

Complain if you want, but to write visually in a movie style is damn hard. Adam Hamdy pulls it off real well. Film has a set of communication tools different from novels, so to write in a movie style you either need years of training or a lot of visual talent and no training at all.

The premise and execution of a post-resource world is an old tale, and the story is fairly well along the road of others, with a conspiracy, a master villain, sexy moles inside the government, and a hero out for revenge who can't let himself get distracted.

I'm not sure here if the future craft holds much water, and don't know if the author takes the technological and resource issues seriously, but don't really care either. Often, it's fun just to get the bad guy.

An action thriller set in a somewhat Sci-Fi settings

Twenty years from now things will change. One of the possible scenarios is in this book. As one of the characters described it - "We're paying for the excesses of past generations and their inability to make tough decisions." That, however, is just a backdrop for the action-adventure set in the near future.

Scott Pierce was a man with good life and a career in the FSA- the Federal Security Agency, a futuristic amalgamation of CIA and FBI. After his wife died, he abandons all of it and goes undercover, integrating himself into the Brotherhood, a large terrorist organization. In order to become accepted, he spends two years in jail, until the time to save a life of a despicable criminal gives him the opportunity he seeks. This is where the story begins.

Pierce is a character who is set on revenge and, how he puts it - "joining the woman he loves." That smacks of martyrdom but does set the immediate motivation for the main hero. There's really no black and white gradations for the characters, both main and secondary, as, thankfully, is the case with better contemporary novels.

One good thing about the books we have access to nowadays, thanks to the ease of publishing provided by Kindle and similar platforms, is that we get to experience books that are not formulaic. There's no gatekeeper in the form of the big publisher that would say something like - "Well, good story but, the format is really not something the reader would want. We are not going to take a risk on it." How many good books haven't gotten published because of that, I wonder. Now, however, these books are on the market and the only gatekeepers here are we, the readers. We either like the book or not, we can recommend a book to our friends or we can say they shouldn't bother.

About this book. I do agree with some of the other reviewers - the book is written in such a way that sometimes it almost feels like watching a movie. Is it a good movie? Yes, I'd go see it. From the literary standpoint, the prose is tight, the narrative unfolds smoothly, and the characters are well fleshed out. The action is cinematic and fast, and the background world is revealed to us in small details that make almost a subconscious impressions - like the stained table cloth or dim lightning levels. There's less description as the story progresses, however, which I think is a mistake on the part of the author - action and character exploration is all well but those little bits of description created a better ambiance in the beginning. However, the cast of characters is large, adding to the descriptive side of the narrative.

The novel, being set in the future, demonstrates possible technologies that could be achieved in just a couple decades. Most of it is something we can relate to and almost recognize; a few things, like Graviton tech, seem to be out there. I wouldn't really classify the novel as a pure Sci-Fi, since the technologies described could probably be replaced by something we use now and would still have a similar impact on the story. As such, they do not seem essential. In my opinion, it's an action story set in a slightly Sci-Fi settings.

All in all, this is a solid piece of writing.

Scary that this could really happen!

This genre isn't my usual preference yet I immensely enjoyed Battalion. There's not a dull moment in this book, not even on the very last page. This reads like a movie and is full of excitement. This seems like a book that would reach young men, especially those interested in conspiracy theories and global destruction!

In a classic fantasy world, young Richard Cypher must go on a perilous quest with the Sword of Truth in order to deal with evils that have a contemporary degree of ambiguity about them. On the way, he acquires the normal collection of wizards, dragons, and human companions as well as an equivalent roster of enemies. Both the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind's ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not. Although a fairly self-contained story, the book has something of the flavor of the first volume of a saga; neither Goodkind nor his publisher will receive too many complaints if a sequel is in the works. Hardly an aspirant to Tolkien's mantle, Goodkind certainly seems, at any rate, to be working on being mentioned in the same breath as Robert Jordan. Roland Green

The magical boundaries between the three lands of forest guide Richard Cypher's world are crumbling: Strange beasts from the Midlands, where magic still exists, appear in his Westland forest. And so does Kahlan Amnell, a young woman with some interesting powers and four assassins on her trail. She is in search of the great wizard who left the Midlands not long after he set the boundaries. He is the only one who can possibly thwart Darken Rahl, an evil wizard who has set in motion a process that will result in the enslavement of the three lands. When Richard's eccentric friend and mentor, Zedd, is sought out for advice about finding the great wizard, Kahlan identifies Zedd as the object of her search. The process that Darken Rahl has initiated requires him to obtain the three boxes of Orden, and, within one year, to open the proper box. As time grows short, Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and a border guard, Chase, go in quest of the one box that the evil wizard still lacks. Among the truths that Richard learns along the way is the wisdom of the Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid and will believe almost anything. An interesting blend

This is my first review. Not because I don’t want to voice my opinions, but because most people will discount a review from someone who has never before contributed reviews. Sad, but true.

I have decided to start reviewing, not only to give myself credibility, but to help like-minded people find quality fantasy.

For the record, I am 70% through Wizard’s First Rule. I logged on to Amazon to investigate purchasing the next book because I found myself invested in the characters enough at this point to insure the next book was waiting for me on my Kindle once I reached ‘the end.’

In perusing some of the reviews, I found so many who have voiced some of my own complaints, as well as those who mentioned some of the star qualities of this book.

Complaints: The repetition. Wow, so often I had to swipe forward and then back, because I was reading the same exact thing…sometimes the exact sentence. Most of it involved the angst between Richard and Kahlan. More about all the ‘big’ secrets they were all hiding from each other. Even more about some of the descriptions…some creatures have yellow eyes, yet others have yellow eyes-but not quite the same yellow. Sometimes just beating the reader over the head with how evil Rahl is.

And then we get to read for ourselves how evil Rahl is. Lovely.

I also found some of the fight scenes very difficult to follow…as if the choreography was off.

The crying: Is this some effort of the author to show the reader the characters have empathy? The first couple of times it works, after that it’s like a cacophony of dampness.

Inconsistencies: The mud people tipped their blades in poison. Yet the knife that cut Kahlan didn’t kill her. The Westland army attacked Midland and Richard insisted it couldn’t be them, even though he becomes worried that maybe it IS them. Er, did the Boundary fall? No one mentions that it does, but they don’t mention that there is no way an army can attack through the Boundary.

Qualities: Richard’s cleverness. To me, Goodkind developed Richard’s logical thinking from the start, so his continued thought process has worked for me.

The Richard/Kahlan romance. This too, except for the “secrets and the angst” has developed at a good pace. Their dependence on each other seems real enough that the obstacles would not hinder their friendship.

The magic: I found it fascinating that each ‘type’ of magic user has a different mastery of a different magic. I think it added an additional level to the story…as long as you can keep track of who can do what.

Characterization: I think Goodkind did a good job differentiating his characters. His main characters have depth. A couple of his antagonist have depth…although most are just bad for the sake of being bad. I do have a problem with every male character (who is bad) wanting to rape the first woman he sees. The differences in each culture also has merit.

As I mentioned, I am only 70% through the book. Some spoilers have indicated things that I have yet to read. I am now unsure if I will commit to the rest of the series…and I LOVE long series’. I have read Wheel of Time about 4 times, so I am not a drive-by fantasy fan.

I have also read several of Sanderson’s series’ and most recently Karen Miller’s Mage books (which I found to be ‘meh’). I have NOT read Martin yet because I have heard that he likes to kill off his main characters (something that distresses me).

I had mixed feelings about this book

I had mixed feelings about this book. When it started I was like, yeah, this is OK. Then there were some clear Star Wars like plot lines (Obi-Wan, anyone?). After that I just started getting bored with the journey. Still, I didn’t give up. I kept on. And I’m glad I did. The story took on a much more original direction, with some emotionally gripping scenes. This isn’t a love story, but there is a type of Romeo and Juliet tragedy entangled within. Some decent twists and interesting characters. Good questions regarding the power of love and hate. The price of justice and forgiveness. Keep in mind that there are scenes more appropriately labeled “adult” than “young.” Some mature sexual content and of course, the expected fantasy violence (does get a bit gory at times). Would personally rate it 18+. Overall, I enjoyed the tale and will look to read the second book down the road.

My all time favorite series! Thank you, Terry, for a great journey!

I first began reading this series in the 90s and haunted the Fantasy aisle in the bookstore periodically until each new installment was offered. Yes, some basic elements are in the story (a must for the genre) but the premise and the back story details are quite unique and fascinating. I grew up watching swashbuckler and mythical movies on Saturday afternoons and pined for more stories of far away heroes and dangerous adventure that were not at all similar to my safe, suburban reality. Perhaps my youth was as shielded as Richard's youthful years in Westland. The Three Muskateers, Jason and the Arogonauts, and then the original series of Star Trek head up my long list of favorites. This series was a natural for me. It has been a few years since I read The Omen Machine so I will read it again before I read the next 2. I am glad to see several of the series made the New York Best Seller List. Right now, the book club I am in wanted a sci-fi or fantasy selection so I proffered this and am enjoying reading it again. Tonight I will discover if they liked it.

Goodness Graceness

Seth Godin's rise to the cultural/marketing/intellectual elite allows him to say or write pretty much whatever he wants; in response, his readers raise up a fist and cry "Hear, hear!" When I put it this way, it sounds terrifying (at the least, unnerving). And maybe it is. But not because Godin has all our attention, but because what he's saying is relevant and smart.

In "Graceful," a shorter ebook released six months ago, Godin discusses the attitude, lifestyle, and aura of the new revolutionaries: the gracefuls.

"Graceful is artistic, elegant, subtle and effective. Graceful makes things happen and brings light but not heat."

Godin's "Graceful" is an inspiring read, not only because of its discussion of how consumers will gravitate towards art instead of stuff, but because his advice for assimilation into this new world is based on values and virtues.

Don't let the word "virtues" turn you off. He doesn't preach; he's not even up on a soapbox. The fact of it is, being graceful makes you a linchpin; grace is achieved with generosity, authenticity, intregrity, and other forms of emotional labor.

"...No one is born graceful. It's not a gift, it's a choice."

Authenticity, genius and integrity are in short supply, considering we're still mucking through a system that "rewards" cogs in the machine and thoughtless drones. Sure, we're seeing examples of the revolution popping up all over the place - innovative workplaces and the exaltation of the creative - but the mentality of the industrial revolution is slow to die.

The graceful, the linchpins, fill the niche of this scarcity.

"Scarcity creates value, and the linchpin understands this."

A linchpin also understands that he wasn't created overnight. He made a choice and took affirmative steps, every day, to express grace.

"No one is a genius all the time. The goal is to be a genius once. And then perhaps again.

Small steps."

Stated differently, being valuable once is an incredible advantage over never being valuable at all.

Further on, Godin goes into detail about this new scarcity.

Grace, an umbrella for Generosity, Happiness, Kindness, and Connection is the new ideal. Confronting fear and allowing yourself to experience "the new" (even if you don't particularly delight in it) are ways to nudge yourself out of the drone and towards the music.

"If you're going to grow, you can't insulate yourself from that food you eat or that person you meet or that situation you dive into, because the insulation prevents you from making the change and finding the understanding you set out to achieve in the first place."

Also, if we don't initiate these uncomfortable moments in a quest for growth, we will be overwhelmed with discomfort when the world starts changing around us. We can't ignore anymore that old systems are changing and we should be proud of the fact that we are "bringing it."

"Industry is changing. The race to the bottom is ending, the search for cheaper, cheaper, cheaper is coming to a close. People are having trouble storing all the things they bought last year, and more trouble still finding the money to buy even more. And as a result, consumers (what a great word that is) are realizing that they can't find more pleasure so easily, that buying more stuff might not be the best plan. We've always been lonely - everyone is lonely - but now the loneliness is harder to mask in a life of manipulation (doing what the boss says) and consumption (doing what the marketer says)."

People seek meaning.

So...give it to them.

I've only touched a few points that Godin makes in this short ebook. He packs a punch, that one.

Things I once knew and forgot

Just a few pages into Mr. Godin's "Graceful" and I'm prompted to write my first Amazon review in years.

What is it about human nature - my nature - that makes playing it safe so compelling? Fear? Laziness?

As he has in so many of his writings, Seth gracefully uses simple language to deliver powerful messages.

Messages about kindness, abundance, and giving another person (my wife, my boss, my client, my service provider) the benefit of the doubt.

Messages that instantly reminded me that I once knew these things, but somehow forgot. Thanks again Seth.
