Rita's World: A View from the Non-Physical, by Frank DeMarco

Rita's World is a conversation between friends in two worlds: Rita Warren, now in the non-physical world, Frank DeMarco, still in the body. While Rita was alive, the two had engaged in weekly sessions in which Rita had asked Frank questions about life, ranging from the simplest to the most profound. He had answered from an altered state of consciousness, speaking for the non-physical beings they called "the guys upstairs" or "TGU." Those sessions were made into a book, The Sphere and the Hologram, after she died in 2008. Now, seven years after she made her transition out of the physical life (3D), she returns to the same subjects with a different perspective...from her world now.

Is life meaningful? Are we somehow important to the world? Is there a way for us in 3D to visualize and understand the non-3D world?

Rita's World answers these questions. Flowing as simply and easily as a conversation between friends, it offers the reader a new way to see the world. It puts the center of life back where it belongs, after centuries of incomplete and misleading answers. What's more, it shows people by example how to find out for themselves what their life really is, and what it really amounts to.

Those who were fascinated by Seth or Edgar Cayce will like this book.

A stellar addition to channeling literature
By Ralphe Wiggins
In the early 2000's Frank DeMarco and Rita worked together to produce several books recording their communications with 'The Guys Upstairs'. Since then Rita died and in late 2014 she contacted DeMarco. That has resulted in another sequence of communicates, the first three months of which are contained in this book. They were close friends while Rita was in body and clearly that friendship has maintained.

This book is a must read for followers of DeMarco's earlier books, for followers of the Seth books, for fans of NDE and ODE descriptions, and for anyone interested in the relationships between living people and post-death beings. It brings new information that is both exciting and pertinent to how we live our lives.

A Unusually High Quality Read in the After-life Genre
By Sofia Axelsson
The after-life has always been one of humanities big mysteries. But while religions and belief-systems of old often has given images of what happens next that serves a certain purpose, today it seems that the idea of what comes after life is more open to interpretation than ever. And interest in after-life literature, such as the whole category of 'near death' experiences, is huge. It is a great thing then, to read something as understated, direct and open-minded as 'Rita's world'. What I really like about this book is that the whole premise is the friendship built up between the author Frank, and Rita. A respectful friendship, centered around their common interest in spirituality and philosophy in life, that simply doesn't end when Rita dies, but rather expands. From where she is on the other side, Rita has access to knowledge about existence that is far beyond ordinary knowledge. Through daily conversations Frank and Rita covers areas such as 'The nature of time,' 'Unlived potential' and 'Good and evil'.

Frank style is meticulous. Dates, time and pauses in the conversation is duly noted. He leaves room for Rita's views and everything seems transcribed word by word. For those tired of the after-life literature's sometimes grand, sweeping interpretations of, for example, 'near death' experiences, this is a great contrast. It is truly Rita's world we enter, and not the ego of Frank DeMarco, which unfortunately is the case for many other writers in the genre. 'Rita's World' is partially created in collaboration with Charles Sides, who helped him structure the questions and subquestions. This has probably enhanced the structure of the book.

For me, this is more than anything a book about a great, and touching friendship. And I leave the book feeling more convinced than ever that death is no end to special relationships, but that a lot of the After-life literature out there simplify the concept of death. This book does not.

An Adventure
By Amazon Customer
This book by Frank de Marco shows how we might add a new dimension to our social life. Suppose there were another channel of reality connecting the living and the dead. It might then be possible to communicate with friends and loved ones after they pass. In this book, the author shares his talent for tapping into that channel and conversing with disembodied minds. He doesn’t try to prove the entity he converses with – Rita -- is the dead lady he knew in life. That would distract him from the subtle process of his dialogue with the unseen. His book shows the reader how that process works. You are allowed to eavesdrop on a conversation where the line between the living and the dead vanishes and, with luck, one’s perception of reality is altered. This book is a powerful tool for exploring what it is like to experience a non-physical dimension of reality. DeMarco’s Rita is an invitation to perform an extraordinary experiment.

Does what it set out to do extremely well
By El Tonio
The very first review I ever wrote for Amazon.com was for this book's predecessor: The Star Wars Action Figure Archive. I liked the original quite a bit, so I immediately pre-ordered this book when I first saw it. I have spent the last couple of days carefully reading some parts and an quickly thumbing through others (for now) so I could write this review and let folks know what to expect. All things considered, I think this book is as good as the the original in most ways and believe it easily deserves at least 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars since fractions were not an option). Here's why.

First, this is a reference book and not a price guide (so, it contains tons of timeless information, but no prices that are quickly outdated). Second, it shows a picture of every figure released as off the time the book was set to the publisher, including most variations and many more obscure figures (with nearly 340 pages containing 6 or more photos each, I have no doubt the author covers at lest the 2300 figures mentioned in the intro). On a related note, all of the pictures are nicely sized so you can easily see the detail for each figure. For example, there are 54 Darth Vader figures covered over eight pages, and 89 Luke Skywalker figures covered over 11 pages. Second (at least for the vintage figures and probably for the rest, too, though I can't say for sure because I don't collect those), it shows each figure holding/wearing all of the weapons/accessories it originally came with. Third, it shows at least one still photo for a vast majority of the figures from the movies, TV shows, and/or comics (this is a wonderful way to see how the figures compare to the character they represent). Fourth, there is a brief commentary on every figure, and a slightly more in depth commentary on more important figures. Fifth, everything is in full color and on high quality semi-gloss paper (the book is an inch thick and weighs over 3.5 pounds). Finally, on p. 10 it shows a sample photo of the card/packaging from each of the 29 production lines included in the book (I mention this as it was one of my favorite features of the book).

That said, this book is a reference guide for the figures themselves and therefore does not deal with packaging of each figure in any meaningful way (so, if that is what you are looking for this may not be the book for you). This is too bad as it was a great feature in the original book (and my primary reason for giving it 4.5 rather than 5 stars). But, it does what it set out to do exceptionally well, is very fun to go through, and contains a lot of useful information that is not readily available elsewhere (especially all in one place), and I'm happy to round up to 5 stars. So, I think most Star Wars action figure collectors will find it to be a worthwhile reference for their library.

Great reference book for Star Wars figures.
By Vegas Gar
[[VIDEOID:moH8VXYN5JYAOK]]This is a great reference for vintage and modern figures. Most of the figures in the book are modern, but they do include all the vintage figures. All the pictures in the book are of OPEN figures, nothing MOC. Please see my video review for details. Thanks!

A great guide to an epic toy line
By Jeremy E. Schultz
This book is everything a long-time fan, like myself, wants from a reference book about the Star Wars toy line. This covers the entire line, up to the present, with excellent photos showing figures with their accessories. Even though I am a reformed collector, this will have a space on my bookshelf for years to come.

The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution, by Helen Azar

The First English Translation of the Wartime Diaries of the Eldest Daughter of Nicholas II, the Last Tsar of Russia, with Additional Documents of the PeriodIn August 1914, Russia entered World War I, and with it, the imperial family of Tsar Nicholas II was thrust into a conflict they would not survive. His eldest child, Olga Nikolaevna, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, had begun a diary in 1905 when she was ten years old and kept writing her thoughts and impressions of day-to-day life as a grand duchess until abruptly ending her entries when her father abdicated his throne in March 1917. Held at the State Archives of the Russian Federation in Moscow, Olga’s diaries during the wartime period have never been translated into English until this volume. At the outset of the war, Olga and her sister Tatiana worked as nurses in a military hospital along with their mother, Tsarina Alexandra. Olga’s younger sisters, Maria and Anastasia, visited the infirmaries to help raise the morale of the wounded and sick soldiers. The strain was indeed great, as Olga records her impressions of tending to the officers who had been injured and maimed in the fighting on the Russian front. Concerns about her sickly brother, Aleksei, abound, as well those for her father, who is seen attempting to manage the ongoing war. Gregori Rasputin appears in entries, too, in an affectionate manner as one would expect of a family friend. While the diaries reflect the interests of a young woman, her tone grows increasingly serious as the Russian army suffers setbacks, Rasputin is ultimately murdered, and a popular movement against her family begins to grow. At the point Olga ends her writing in 1917, the author continues the story by translating letters and impressions from family intimates, such as Anna Vyrubova, as well as the diary kept by Nicholas II himself. Finally, once the imperial family has been put under house arrest by the revolutionaries, we follow events through observations by Alexander Kerensky, head of the initial Provisional Government, these too in English translation for the first time. Olga would offer no further personal writings, as she and the rest of her family were crowded into the basement of a house in the Urals and shot to death in July 1918.The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution, translated and introduced by scientist and librarian Helen Azar, and supplemented with additional primary source material, is a remarkable document of a young woman who did not choose to be part of a royal family and never exploited her own position, but lost her life simply because of what her family represented.

Great for Teachers working on the subject share with your students
By Edward T. Winn
The book is the first of its kind, because it consists of the authentic diary entries of one of the daughters of the last Russian Tsar. In addition, it is not an indiscriminate repetitive collection of diary entries, but a collection of what looks like carefully chosen representative ones. Some of the entries have been published in Russian (never in English as far as I know), but many of the diary entries I am seeing here for the first time… As a bonus, the book does not only contain Olga’s diaries, but also some other valuable primary sources, including never before published (in English) diary entries of Tsar Nicholas II himself, as well as the memoirs of Alexander Kerensky, and the events seen from their points of view. These, and others, make this book an important resource for WWI and Russian revolution scholars and history buffs too. If you are looking for primary source material of this period, this book is definitely for you.

At last Olga Romanov speaks for herself !
By Voves
[[VIDEOID:mo1Z99I1XOBYJ0E]]As a long time Romanov enthusiast, with a particular interest in the Tsar's eldest daughter, Olga Nikolaevna ( 1895-1918) I'm so thrilled that Olga's diaries are at long last available to the English reader!

This is thanks to Helen Azar's marvelous translations of Olga's words in the book , " The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution "

Ms. Azar also included in her book a selection of never before translated letters of Olga's as well as a wealth of other primary sources, again never available in English before.

It's wonderful that along with seeing her photographs as well as reading about the Romanovs, one can finally read Olga's own words as well!

Thank you Ms Azar!

Rough Guide vs. Lonely Planet
By David
My friend and I visited Thailand earlier this month, and we conducted an experiment in the process: I used Rough Guide and she used Lonely Planet. We came up with similar trip plans, and we both turned to the Internet to fill in some blanks before squaring away our itinerary. Once on the road, we found ourselves using Rough Guide slightly more often than Lonely Planet.

Both guides are well organized and reasonably complete, but the Rough Guide's color maps are easier to read. While LP has more detail, it comes at the expense of readability, especially since the maps are not in color. The Rough Guide fails to adequately discuss elephant parks and other activity destinations around Chiang Mai. While LP does a better job, it still isn't complete, so I recommend using the Internet to get everything sorted out.

We did a back-to-back comparison of recommended Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, and we found the LP recommendation to be superior. However, several restaurant listings are the same in both guides, and we did not encounter a bad Rough Guide recommendation on our journey. We found the Rough Guide's accommodation listings to be more helpful in Chiang Mai and Ko Phi Phi, but the LP recommendations are not lacking. I recommend consulting TripAdvisor to get a fuller picture of available options, as neither guide provides an exhaustive listing.

I like that the Rough Guide has full color and more photos, but the Lonely Planet guide excels at legibility. The Rough Guide switches between a couple fonts, one of which is quite difficult to read, and text does not always flow up-to-down, left-to-right in its two-column layout. LP is the clear winner here.

Both guides are overall winners. Generally speaking, I recommend Lonely Planet for Bangkok and destinations to the north and Rough Guide for destinations to the south. Rough Guide does have the advantage of not being LP; there is an unfortunate number of tourists who never try something that wasn't printed in an LP guide first. Don't be one of them and you'll have a great time in Thailand!

Key to an awesome trip
By Kevin
I brought this book for my Nov 2012 Thailand trip. I waited until the current issue came out (a month before my trip). Totally worth the money. Rough Guide was perfect for my Southern Thailand itinerary. I went to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and of course, Bangkok. I stayed in all the recommended spots from the book except at Koh Phi Phi. Everything in the book was accurate. I love how Rough Guide adds in their opinion. I picked up the Lonely Planet version for Thailand in the book store after my trip and noticed they were less opinionated and just stated facts. It also didn't have as much content as the Rough Guide. All the travelers I met during the trip used Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide actually had different hostels/hotels they recommend and I believe they had even more than Lonely Planet. The maps were easy to read. My Rough Guide was able to take a lot of abuse during the trip. If you are planning on going to Thailand, I would definitely recommend this book over others.

Great for browsing, only fair for actual research
By Chris Backe
Like most guidebooks, it's great for browsing, but it's already out of date. As a travel blogger, I find myself using it occasionally to round out (or sometimes confirm) a trip. It's rarely left the house (mainly because I'll take notes and e-mail them to myself), and it's heavy. That can't fairly be helped, but the font can - a light sans-serif font that's difficult to read in lower light. The smaller font size doesn't help either.

If you're planning an epic trip of Thailand, or prefer to browse travel guides, this is fine. If your trip will be less than a couple of weeks long, this is overkill.
